the breadth and depth of internal and external resources that can be drawn upon to initiate and sustain recovery from alcohol and other drug problems. provide a range of responsive and inclusive support and opportunities for people in recovery and their families Clinical guidance and best practice guidelines have highlighted the evidence for and value of peer support and recovery support in treatment systems. This includes a range of guidance from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence ( NICE) and other government agencies (for more details of these, see Part 4: glossary and resources). social capital: examples of this include peer support, and family, friends, social networks and opportunities that support recovery

Faces and Voices of Recovery UK ( FAVOR UK) is a national charity made up of people in recovery, their friends, families and recovery community organisations ( RCOs). RCOs is an alternative term for a LERO. FAVOR UK builds on the work of the Faces and Voices of Recovery (FAVOR) which developed the Alliance for Recovery Centered Organizations ( ARCO) in the US.The final outer layer of figure 2 represents the wider community and the factors in it that can promote and inhibit recovery. These factors are represented here by the 5 steps to mental wellbeing and the 5 ways to wellbeing. These are: Decision: Intention develops to take action about the substance use as concrete goals begin to take shape. A start date is set. The support offered by treatment services and by recovery support services are both vital to a person’s recovery. The interaction of both services and the local community contributes to the effectiveness of a recovery-oriented system of care ( ROSC). Some RSS are delivered by treatment providers, some by lived experience recovery organisations ( LEROs), and some by a combination of both. See section 7 below for more about LEROs. Peer-led initiatives are often started without any formal funding and led by an individual or small group, so are necessarily resourceful and entrepreneurial. This means that they are skilled at identifying and tapping into community resources, including:

Behavioral therapy : Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, behavioral couples therapy, and family therapy. Under all circumstances, recovery takes time because it is a process in which brain cells gradually recover the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another widely applied benchmark of recovery is the cessation of negative effects on oneself or any aspect of life. Many definitions of recovery include not only the return to personal health but participation in the roles and responsibilities of society.RCOs are hubs within the recovery community. Within these dedicated spaces people in recovery can find a network of helpful recovery support services. These could include peer-based meetings, peer mentor programs, referrals to support services, and social events. The Association of Recovery Community Organizations lists the national network of RCOs helping them to provide a unified voice advocating for people in recovery. Employment-based recovery support The existing guidance shows why local areas should focus on lived experience initiatives and recovery support services. Until now the guidance about these issues has been disparate and there has been a need for a comprehensive set of guidance in one place. So, this guidance aims to provide that. Granfield R and Cloud W. Coming clean: Overcoming addiction without treatment. New York University Press, 1999. Many find in 12-step programs—Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotic Anonymous (NA) are among the best known—a caring, supportive community willing to pull each other through the temptations, the self-rebuke, and the hopelessness that especially mark the early stages of recovery. They also value having role models of recovery and someone to call on when the recovering self is an unsteady newborn. Whatever the stress relief that comes from being in a group, many others are not comfortable with the religiosity, the steady focus on the dangers of relapse rather than on growth, or the subscription to powerlessness of AA and NA. Data show that the programs are helpful for some but not for everyone. Addiction treatment is not one-size-fits-all. When someone has made the changes they want to their alcohol or drug use, and is in early recovery, recovery support services give more focus to further developing their recovery capital and recovery identity.
