It continued for months until I was prepared to concede defeat. Then I met Chris Sacca, formerly of Google fame and now an investor and triathlete in training, at a BBQ and told him of my plight. Before I had a chance to finish, he cut me off: Harder swimming doesn’t always result in faster swimming. In most cases, this will result in slower swim times. Terry’s approach underscores a crucial paradigm shift in athlete’s thinking, especially beginner swimmers who have a tendency to push harder to go faster. Update: Since the publication of the book and DVD, the Total Immersion Method now has a full video course online for a great price. I 100% recommend it. You can view it here. Can You Really Learn To Swim From A Book? A couple of months ago I discoverd TI for myself and found it really interesting. There’s not much more to add to what you said, here’s what I found was the most important for me: As you must be slow and deliberate in the early stages of learning this method, you learn to swim “in the moment”, concentrating on creating fluid movements in the water.

If there was a storm the day before, be very careful. Ocean floors can be loose and unstable, thus causing rip-currents. Oceans, rivers and lakes tend to have more debris after storms. In fact, many TI “drills” focus on swimming on your side (without rotating at all, just to practice what it feels like to point your shoulder completely down). Dovetailing on the mechanical concepts in the latter video, this next lesson in the series focuses on hand and arm positioning with Total Immersion swimming. Terry introduces a couple new drills in the mix, one of which is called the “Spearswitch,” which enables swimmers to imprint the essential spearing habits and where to direct their hand in the freestyle motion. I’m sending this because I just heard your swiming Ted talk and you asked for ideas for schools and education)If you keep your arms extended as much as possible in front of you, you will achieve this. Always ensure at least one arm is in front of you. So when you switch arms on the stroke, always ensure you have one arm in front of you. This is a technique that focuses on proper body position, body rotation, and a long, natural stroke. Unlike traditional swimming techniques, which can sometimes rely on brute force and strength (“more laps!!”), Total Immersion Swimming emphasizes a more relaxed and efficient approach to swimming. great value in a book! Some of the best video content on Total Immersion Swimming is a series of lectures in which you can not only get to know Terry, but also better understand the ideas behind his approach.

It's a method created by a US swimmer, Terry Loughlin, who realised that elite swimmers move through the water in a highly efficient way rather than trying to beat the water into submission. Not everyone can become an Olympic swimmer, but everyone can learn how to swim in an efficient way. He calls it fishlike swimming instead of human swimming.

Burnout In Swimming And How To Avoid It?

Bei der Bewertung des Buches schwanke ich zwischen 2 Sternen, wenn ich die literarische Qualität bewerten sollte und 5 Sternen, wenn es um den Nutzen des Buches geht. I’ve tried to learn to swim almost a dozen times, and each time, my heart jumps to 180+ beats-per-minute after one or two pool lengths. It’s indescribably exhausting and unpleasant. It does! But once I'd reassured myself that it wasn't about being repeatedly forced into situations where you might drown unless you swim, I got quite excited about it. No, it's not for absolute beginners. There's no way I could have done a weekend like this when I first started learning to swim, though you can learn to swim from scratch with this method too. They have coaches all over the country who'll give you a one-to-one session if you do want to start from nothing, but the target audience does seem to be those who can swim a bit and would like to swim more effectively – for a triathlon, for example. If like me you've learned enough to be able to manage a scrappy length of rubbish crawl, then the drills are very doable and can vastly improve your swimming. Oh yes, this isn’t really lengthening, more like creating space, but I find breathing with my chest as well (using the intercostal muscles between the ribs) also gives a very good feeling, and the action of reaching with each arm can help to accentuate opening the chest.
