Description

The story starts out with a hit and run accident and Jacob, a young child fresh out of school that day, is killed. Jenna is supported by side characters, such as the quirky community members of Penfach, who despite having a lesser role in the plot, appeared well formed. A storming psychological thriller that has everything: breathtaking twists , great pace and pitch-perfect characterisation . I love Janet, she is brave, gutsy and caring she does not get everything right but she has the courage to put the one foot in front of the other.

It happens in a heartbeat; the feeling of space by her side as he runs toward home, seeking out the warmth of the hall, with its porch-light glow. I couldn’t get enough, and even its end delivers jaw-dropping moments which makes the story linger long after the flip of the final page. Hers is a perspective laden with emotion, a broken woman who walks out of her home, out of her life, to the comforts of the unknown, to forget the sounds and sights that haunt her every minute. Escaping her marriage and past hurts, Jenna finds solace in an isolated and cold stone cottage in Penfach. They exchanged half-smiles in mutual acknowledgement of the adrenalin rush it always felt so wrong to enjoy when something so horrific had happened.

Staying in a remote cottage, the silence – in her head – is deafening as the past comes back to haunt her. I Let You Go follows Jenna Gray as she moves to a ramshackle cottage on the remote Welsh coast, trying to escape the memory of the car accident that plays again and again in her mind and desperate to heal from the loss of her child and the rest of her painful past. On my bedside cabinet is the brass alarm clock Eve gave me when I went to university—“Because you’ll never get to lectures, otherwise”— and I’m shocked to see it’s ten thirty already.

Rimmer presents relationships in many different forms in this novel, from the love between Lexie and Sam, to the sisterly bond between Lexie and Annie. These characters offer the reader an alternative perspective of what it is like to work behind the scenes of a hit and run, sadly involving a small child. Following the tragic death due to a hit and run accident of five year old Jacob Jordan, his mother disappears, blaming herself for his death.I was drawn into Before I Let You Go from the opening and I continued to turn page after page over, in the hope that Annie would be able to start a new life with her baby daughter. If you’ve read and liked Paula Hawkins’ ‘The Girl on the Train,’ which was excellent, you’ll like this too.
