Thoroughly clean and dry skin. Do not apply moisturisers. Tear along the perforated edge of the Collagen and Retinol patch sachet. The first three programmes are faradic and the last, galvanic, with each programme offering a different benefit to your beauty regime. Although EMS is safe when in devices designed for facial use, it is still putting electrical currents into your face and there are some circumstances in which you cannot use it, including… Who wouldn’t want a facelift machine without having to shell out a few thousand pounds? Firstly I’d say that 60 seconds is a little misleading. It’s 60 per area, so once you’ve treated all of the areas suggested, you’re really looking at 20 minutes. This brilliant device is great for both men and women because it’s a pretty natural way to enhance features that have….um, shall we say dropped or aren’t so firm as they once were. The Rio has another uber cool function: it can be used for iontophoresis, aka the infusion of ingredients into the skin via electrical current. I loved the conductor gel as it was really very hydrating. Not like other gels I had used with the Rio. I started to use the NuFace and…..nothing. I looked at it over and over. All seemed to be okay. The lights were on but absolutely nothing seemed to be happening. No tingling sensation even. It’s clearly broken I thought. The collagen and retinol treatments should only be used once in 24 hours and we would recommend 48 hours if you have sensitive skin.

As EMS is stimulating - well, it’s even in the name - it shouldn’t be used on areas of pustular acne (ie. red, raised spots or whiteheads), rosacea, sensitive skin, damaged skin or on scars, moles or varicose veins. Care should also be taken in the eye area, with Rio stating to leave at least 1cm between the device and the eyeball at all times.

For best results follow the faradic facial toning regime every day for the first few weeks, alternating between programmes 1 & 2 each day. I continued to use it four times a week. I wasn’t sure it was doing anything and to be honest I kept wondering whether my first assumption was right. It wasn’t actually working properly. But it was and sorry to say, this machine is not for me. Rio 60 Second Facelift Although it is painful, I will continue to use this great little lifting device a few times a week as it really does work! Combined with my Retin-A I think it has become a ‘can’t be without’ item.

Our Expert View

Tone and firming has a lifting effect on the face together with plumping out to reduce the visible appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This in effect is a natural alternative to dermal fillers. If you already have dermal fillers you should seek advice from whoever gave the treatment as they could consider whether it could be combined – dermal fillers can only achieve so much. The microcurrents would not have any direct effect of the filler.
