Tour Note: *support to T-Rex Gigs in Germany, promoted by Mama Concerts and their first ever **US Tour - supportto Savoy Brown and Mandrill and a co-headline tour with UK rockers Slade (Australia). John Coghlan: I remember we were in Germany in a club and this ‘Roadhouse Blues’ came on and the audience loved it, they were leaping about, having a good time, so we put it in our set and it paid off. JC: I’ve never smoked cigarettes in my life because I hated the idea of it, but I remember having a joint because in those days as far as I was concerned it was pretty mild and it was pretty harmless.

None of it was played individually like playing in the studio on your own – except for the vocals, we always did the vocals separate. The soft rock intro gradually shifts to a more powerful guitar piece in a way that is reminiscent of early Fleetwood Mac and has that band's delicate sense of dynamics. The second acoustic album suffers because the strongest songs were chosen for the first acoustic album. This time with the line-up it will be gold, and I do not want it to go down to silver and then to bronze. We didn’t want to spend all our time trying to explain how we want to go in one direction and have him trying to pull us in another way.

But four albums came and went without making the British bestsellers, until finally, their Vertigo Records debut Piledriver cracked the code and entered the chart on January 20, 1973.The opening song, "Don't Waste My Time" was written by Francis Rossi and Bob Young in the soon-to-be trademark shuffle style the group would become famous for. The album ended with a seven minute-plus run through the Doors’ “Roadhouse Blues,” with other bonus tracks being added to the album’s 1990, 2005 and 2014 reissues. After the initial success, the band were no longer successful and we decided we didn’t want to wear that kind of clothing anymore and we wanted to go back to something similar to what we’d done before the success.

Francis Rossi: If you go back to ’65, we had more of a rocky thing going than ‘Matchstick Men’ at the time. A much better album than any of the five preceding releases but still fairly average in comparison to the band's early seventies output. Still, most of the Status Quo fans wanted power rock, and the band obliged with one of their best pieces, the tempo-shifting "Big Fat Mama," which actually managed some U. The friday gig at the famous New York Academy of Music with Savoy Brown, ELO andManfred Mann was cancelled. On the whole Piledriver is still an enjoyable listen, one that has aged much better than later albums by the same band or much other hard rock from this period.

They’d joined the UK singles landscape with the 1968 top tenners “Pictures Of Matchstick Men” and “Ice In The Sun,” then after a quiet-ish spell, there were further hits in 1970 including “Down The Dustpipe. It peaked at number five in the UK and included several favourites that would be featured frequently in live concerts. In a retrospective review, AllMusic applauded the album as both crowd-pleasing and moderately ambitious, commenting that "Despite the name, most of the music on Piledriver is varied and subtle enough to be interesting. FR: It’s not necessarily my decision to end it now, but it can’t go on without me, and I’m not going!

He let us have a bit of free reign, and that’s when we made Ma Kelly’s Greasy Spoon, which was the start of the change, then we did Dog Of Two Head. The most serious problem that the crew, audience and bands had to overcome was heavy downpours of rain.If you love what we do, you can help tQ to continue bringing you the best in cultural criticism and new music by joining one of our subscription tiers. When they first got back together for gigs last year they were welcomed with sold out shows and grown men weeping with happiness, such is the lasting effect of the band’s 70s period. Based heavily on the fashion of a single Doors tune, Quo found their rhythm, and the result was their biggest success to date.
