Her first trial was in leaving behind everything that was familiar or dear to her heart and following Abraham on a dust-filled caravan trek to an unknown land, sustained only by Abraham’s word that the Lord would lead them there. Sarah withstood this test only to face another. When they arrived at their destination, they did not find the land of milk and honey they expected; instead, they found a land so desolate that it could not sustain their needs. But Sarah’s faith was such that she moved on to Egypt with Abraham without murmuring, obeying without question the Lord’s commandment that she be known there as Abraham’s sister. As a result, she was taken to Pharaoh’s house, where she was thrown into an environment very similar to that of her homeland, for the God of Abraham was not known there. As a guest of the king, surrounded by idol worshipers, if Sarah were ever to falter in the worship of Jehovah, this would be the time. But she did not! She emerged not only as a virtuous wife, but as a faithful worshiper of the one true God, grateful to him for the protection he had given her against the many evils of that court. This has lead in some cases to a refutation of individuality in its most extreme forms, where a brother will make vows to not speak unless in battle or performing acts of worship, to abstain from certain activities such as the eating of cooked meats, and to forsake personal names in favour of generic titles. Undertaking these vows is respected but is not encouraged as the general belief is that a warrior who retains his individuality is more likely to be more adaptable on the field of war. The Timkat celebrations were to continue for three more days with prayers and masses, after which the tabots would be returned to the churches where they were kept. I was more eager than ever to locate the original ark, so I headed for Aksum, about 200 miles northeast.

But Rachel never knew of the high destiny of Joseph, for she died mourning his supposed death soon after giving birth to his brother Benjamin. The next day was hot and dusty. Except for the occasional camel and its driver, Aksum's streets were nearly empty. We weren't far from the Denakil Desert, which extends eastward into Eritrea and Djibouti. It is with the Ordo Hereticus that the relatively cordial relationship begins to adopt a more “traditional” Unforgiven form. Wary that the Ordo might find links to the Fallen and uncover the great secret held close over the last ten millennia, the Guardians distance themselves as much as possible from Hereticus Inquisitors, cooperating just often enough to divert an investigation into their activities. Given that it is not uncommon for Space Marine Chapters, even those who are relatively close to individual Inquisitors, to be somewhat reluctant in their dealings with the Inquisition, the Guardians have not attracted undue notice for this behaviour. The people had “transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, and broken the everlasting covenant.” (Isa. 24:5.) Therefore, the covenant was no longer in effect. As a result, the Lord withdrew his spirit from his people and left them desolate. They became wanderers and strangers in strange lands, for the Lord scattered his people among all the nations of the earth—a tragic testimony that the guardians of the covenant had failed to keep faith with the Lord their God.

The 2nd company is configured as normal for an Unforgiven Chapter, although it seldom deploys as an entire company, instead being parceled out to other companies and battle formations to provide heavy reconnaissance and interdiction capability. It is not unknown for members of the 2nd company to deploy as jump infantry, instead of being vehicle mounted, should the terrain or mission dictate it.

This includes possessing formations similar to the elite Deathwing and Ravenwing, although they are not named as such. Though these elite formations have performed admirably, they have not garnered the recognition of their Dark Angels' counterparts. We've had 1,000 years of Judaism, followed by 2,000 years of Christianity, and that's why our religion is rooted in the Old Testament," he told me. "We follow the same dietary laws as Judaism, as set out in Leviticus," meaning that his followers keep kosher, even though they are Christians. "Parents circumcise their baby boys as a religious duty, we often give Old Testament names to our boys and many villagers in the countryside still hold Saturday sacred as the Sabbath." The Aldisses’ starter home is also potentially liable for another astronomical charge – “chancel repair liability”. This ancient burden can require landowners to foot the bill for repairs to the local church, a sum that could reach hundreds of thousands of pounds. The couple have had to buy indemnity insurance to protect against future demands.Eleventh Hour • Core Rulebook • Game Master's Kit • Final Testament • Hammer of the Emperor • Enemies of the Imperium • No Surrender • Shield of Humanity • Salvaging Solace In parallel, there is another story, of Digby Kilgour, a young Scottish doctor who travels from Glasgow to Madras to join the Indian medical service during colonial times. The two stories dovetail only towards the end, “like a river linking people upstream with those below”. Threaded through the novel are historic events – Indian soldiers fight for the British in the world wars; India gains independence; the newspaper then the radio then a post office arrives; the state of Kerala is formed; the communists win elections; the Naxalite revolution runs rampant. What differs with the Guardians is that it is that, due to a cataclysmic battle against the Eldar of Craftworld Saim-Hann in the 38th Millenium, the Guardians are unable to field a 1st company made up entirely of terminator squads. Over the centuries since their loss, the Chapter has assembled enough TDA suits to equip 14 full squads of the 1st company. I very much like the idea of man-made deathworlds. I think that's a brilliant idea that works very well. Of course, it's important to remember that GW has stipulated that recruits from the Astartes have to be aged between 10-16 or thereabouts. As a result, many of the hive gangers and malcontents would be too old. I just mention this because although I believe you're trying to intimate that the inmates have had children and a society has evolved, you might want to specify. The lifestyle and doctrines of the Guardians of the Covenant are even more monastic in nature than is normal for a Chapter of the Astartes. The battle-brothers of the Chapter devote as much time to intellectual study and the scholarly arts as they do to training for battle. But through the centuries, Ethiopian Christians have claimed that the ark rests in a chapel in the small town of Aksum, in their country's northern highlands. It arrived nearly 3,000 years ago, they say, and has been guarded by a succession of virgin monks who, once anointed, are forbidden to set foot outside the chapel grounds until they die. Today the Lord is calling his people from every land and clime. Mothers of the birthright tribe again have the privilege of being the guardians of the covenant. This time they must not fail! That said, The Covenant of Water is an important book for its efforts in documenting times and places most readers would be too young to have witnessed. It is also a tribute to the scientific progress that has made human lives healthier, and the sacrifices made by previous generations. As one of the characters with the Condition says: “The voyage of discovery isn’t about new lands but having new eyes.” I asked if he knew of any evidence that the ark had come to Ethiopia with Menelik. "These stories were handed down through the generations by our church leaders, and we believe them to be historical facts," he told me in a whisper. "That's why we keep tabots in every church in Ethiopia."

I liked the fact that he had the red robes, but because it used the champion torso, the robes were toned down and a less prevalent part of the model. So, although getting lots of champion torsos isn't very practical, I think there are a lot of other similarly unique ways to add that red spot color without committing to a veteran robed body. Nonetheless, several items of Power Armour belonging to battle-brothers from the Guardians of the Covenant that have taken the Apocryphon Oath lie unclaimed in dusty niches of the Hall of Glory in Watch Fortress Erioch, their owners having fallen in battle whilst serving the Deathwatch.

In addition to their monastic mentality, the Guardians have also been affected by the institutions of learning and the large number of scholars who live on Mortikah VII to take advantage of its repositories of Lore, both restricted and un-restricted. Indeed, Mortikah VII is home to one of the most renowned Scholams in the sector with regards Psychic and Anthropological studies. I asked if the ark in Ethiopia resembles the one described in the Bible: almost four feet long, just over two feet high and wide, surmounted by two winged cherubs facing each other across its heavy lid, forming the "mercy seat," or footstool for the throne of God. Paulos shrugged. "Can you believe that even though I'm head of the Ethiopian church, I'm still forbidden from seeing it?" he said. "The guardian of the ark is the only person on earth who has that peerless honor." Herev was well suited to this latter task given the philosophy of the Angels of Absolution and their seeing the hunting of the Fallen as a holy duty but not something that they must do to absolve any inherent sin of theirs inherited from the Dark Angels. The first Grand Master did his work well, and by the time he was slain in battle against the Dark Eldar, almost two centuries after he was given the task of founding the Guardians of the Covenant, he left behind a Chapter strong enough to stand against the trials to come.
