Description

Monkey Shoulder is a world-class whiskey created by joining three world-class single malts from the iconic Speyside Distilleries. This excellent whiskey was introduced to the market in 2005 but has already won numerous gold, silver, and bronze awards. It is smooth, subtle, and creamy with delicate flavors of vanilla and winter spice (cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg). Sweet flavors of butterscotch, toasted barley, and berry fruit balance this blended Scotch perfectly. Monkey Shoulder delivers a finish that is smooth and memorable.

The bottle has a spring cap wrapped in a gold foil. The foil is wrapped by a typed label saying “The whisky contained in this bottle is the product of the finest distilleries in Scotland specially selected HAIG & HAIG LTD.” The only other label is the one with the coat of arms. It is a blue shield with a white “X”, framed by upright white horses. Above the shield is a small ribbon with a red animal of some kind above it. There are no mentions of a King or Queen. It is the same image as the coat of arms above the “FIVE STAR” in your Markinch & EdinBurgh circular picture above. Dimple 15 YO ще ви изненада с аромата си на карамел и подправки и с отлично балансиран вкус – усещат се гладки нотки на карамел, пушек и малцов ечемик. Нотката на дъб е част от финала, допълнен от бонбони Лакта;Tastes of vanilla and winter spice are well-balanced by notes of butterscotch, toasted barley, and berry fruit The Royal Coat of Arms– All bottles of Haig will carry a representation of the British Royal Family Coat of Arms and will mention the King or Queen reigning at time of bottling. This will give you a general idea of the age. dimple whiskey

Their daughter, also named Margaret, married a local lawyer John Jameson from Alloa in 1788. On marriage, John and Margaret Jameson moved to Dublin to run a new Stein family distillery in Bow Street which had been opened in 1780. [8] Contrary to popular belief, the Jameson Irish Whiskey company was not actually founded in 1780, but in 1810 when John Jameson bought the distillery from his wife's cousins, the Steins. The original Jameson Distillery in Bow Street is now home to the Jameson Visitor Centre. The Stein, Haig, and Jameson families were significant figures in the whisky market from that time forward. Value wise? At least €200 to €300 in the good condition that yours seems to be in. However, I have seen these change hands at auction for up to €1,000 4 or 5 years ago. It’s all about meeting the right buyer at the right time. If it was mine, I would not let it go for less than €500. As you will see from my other posts here, a dealer will only offer you 25% to 30% of the selling price. If you want to sell it, put it up on e-Bay etc. for the best results. Haig Dimple, a more expensive blend with "a heavier malt influence of whiskies from Glenkinchie and Linkwood", labelled as 15 years old, in the dimpled, three-sided bottle. The second bottle is again Dimple with a similar label showing Dimple old Blend Scotch Whisky, John Haig and Co Ltd, Markinch Scotland, with a different coat of arms this being by appointment to Her Majesty. On the front of the bottle is the label Dimple.Rogelio D: Monkey Shoulder and Glenmorangie 10 are great introductions for the price. As far as availability, Glenlivet and Glenfiddich 12 are everywhere so those are great to introduce to beginner’s also. Highland Park 12 is a great intro to smoke It’s all makey-up marketing stuff and I can think of no reason at all why it should have been commemorated in the 1980’s other than a Whiskey Marketing executive thought it was a good idea at the time. Ray C: I shared a dram Saturday evening with several friends who were first time scotch drinkers. One had received as a gift a bottle of McClelland’s Lowland Single Malt so we tried it. I enjoyed it, but more importantly, they enjoyed it. Fairly mild but nice taste. We all are looking forward to the next time we have a chance to get together and share a dram! Scotch whisky also has the most character and variety. Scotch whiskies have more variety in their manufacturing processes, are aged for more than three years so the aging process can have a greater effect, and you can have two Scotch whiskies that are widely divergent in their flavor profiles. Islays and Speysides anyone?I have had the bottle all my life. It was on a shelf behind our bar in the basement of the house I grew up in. My father gave it to me when I married. He told me to open it when my son got married & drink his health. My son does not drink so the bottle has remained unopened. I will be 73 this month. My brother was born in 1941. There is some confusion whether my father received the bottle when he got married in 1924 or when my brother was born in 1941. The seal says: Somerset Importers, Ltd. New York, N.Y. on one side & has the numbers: 36-8543363 on the other side. The IL. tax stamp has the numbers: 234751 on it. I’d be interested to know how old this bottle actually is & if it has any real value. The level of the whiskey has gone down to half way below the “&” from evaporation as it’s always been stored upright. I’m not real computer literate so pictures are not easy for me. If you think it would help, I could get my granddaughter to help me take some. a b McNamara, Stuart (31 January 2015). "Haig Whisky Distillery Restoration & Preservation". Haig Whisky Club . Retrieved 5 May 2015. Haig and Haig developed a sizable export business in the USA until it was bought (along with many other small Scotch whiskey companies by the Distilling Company in 1923 during the big Scotch Whisky consolidation at that time. For more info on this see my article on protecting Irish Whiskey at http://irishwhiskey.com/protecting-irish-whiskey/ . The Distillers’ Company then positioned Haig and Haig as a fully owned subsidiary of the Main John Haig and Co in 1925. Unfortunately, the new incarnation of Haig and Haig then remained dormant until 1933 after the introduction of prohibition in the USA. From then on, Haig and Haig regained momentum and continued to market Haig Pinch and Haig Gold Whisky in the USA until the late 1970’s when the Haig Whisky brand fizzled and died after passing from one multinational to another. Balvenie was the second distillery opened by William Grant in 1892. The distillery instantly started producing premium whiskey with the main focus being quality and consistency. In 2006, the Balvenie Distillery received gold awards for its Founders Reserve 10-Year-Old, Balvenie Portwood 1991, Balvenie New Wood 17-Year-Old, Doublewood 12 Year Old, Portwood 21 Year Old, and Balvenie 30. This was a record haul of gold medals at the International Spirits Challenge.

Monkey Shoulder is a tribute to all the malt men around the world that turn the malted barley by hand. The traditional malt whiskey distillation process involved the malted barley being turned over (mixed) by hand using wooden paddles and shovels. Often, this laborious process would cause injury to the shoulders of these upstanding gentlemen. To find some relief from the pain, they would hang their arms low like monkeys. This injury became known as “Monkey Shoulder” and is the inspiration for this exceptional blend. A Haig distillery, now known as the Cameronbridge distillery, was founded in 1824. [2] [9] In 1830, it became the first distillery to produce grain whisky using the column still method invented by Robert Stein in 1826 (before the later better-known refinement developed by Aeneas Coffey). If the label has both Edinburgh and Markinch mentioned then you may have an unusual bottle! Haig Whisky became a Limited company in 1894 with registered offices in Edinburgh. With expansion of the Markinch production facility after World War 2, the registered offices were moved there in 1952 and thereafter, bottles carried just Markinch on the label. Haig Whisky bottled during the transition period during the build of the new HQ between 1950 and late 1952 carried both place names. My dad loved his Dimple whisky and only poured a glass on special occasions. Remember, that was the 80’s in South Africa, so the whisky variety was minimal. It is not a bad whisky, but I found it a bit forgettable. It starts delicate but gets better on sip 2 or 3. More flavour comes to the front after a few drops of water. The coins on the bottles show the cross of St Andrew for Scotland and the Unicorn of England surmounted by a mish mash of the “United Kingdom” Royal coat of arms (Lion and Unicorn) with the crosses of St George for England and St Andrew for Scotland. The left of the label has (separate lines in new quotes) “Contents 26 1/2 ozs” followed by “PINCH”“Finest”“Blended”“Scots Whisky”.
