You see, I’ve always tended toward cleaner watches, even with my divers (like my Mido Ocean Star and Omega SMP 2254.50, the latter which I’ve described as a ‘dress diver’). So how could I have been so surprised when the new, fixed-bezel Seiko 5 SRPE51 came along? How did I not anticipate the love?

As I mentioned above, there isn’t a lot to talk about on the dial. There aren’t numerous complications or a bezel action to discuss. However, Seiko in their mad laboratory executed the elements that are present on the dial perfectly. The Seiko 5 SRPE55K1 keeps all of the sporty and iconic design traits of the dive watch but has had the rotating bezel removed and replaced with a polished bezel instead. The result is a sporty dive-inspired watch that is more versatile, classy, and suitable for everyday wear. It is classy enough to be worn on formal occasions, but also sporty enough to be worn on casual occasions too. After spending some time with this watch, I concluded that if Seiko were going relaunch the Seiko 5 line, they should have started with this watch and not the 5KX. This watch makes so much more sense in the Seiko 5 line than the 5KX. Not that the 5KX doesn’t belong in the Seiko 5 line; Seiko has always included dive-style watches in the 5 line. It doesn’t make sense to start with the 5KX. Here’s where the earlier criticisms of the watch industry come in: When viewed like this, the Seiko 5 starts to seem like an amalgamation of Seiko’s greatest hits. Like someone fed data to an algorithm (or, just a large corporation), and out popped this watch, perfectly designed to be inoffensive and have broad appeal.

Dial Details

The silver bracelet of the watch is made from highly durable stainless steel, that has been finished using a brushing technique. This creates a subtle, but welcomed, contrast between the polishing of the case and the brushing of the bracelet. It comes in the style of an oyster bracelet, which is associated with the Rolex brand. It fastens usinga three fold clasp. The Dial: First, we want to make it clear that when we refer to the SRPE, we talk strictly about the Seiko 5 Sports series of watches. We state this as the SRPE model prefix is also used for Seiko Samurais. As an outlier; the SRPE83K1, which is also part of the Seiko 5 Sports Sense collection, is actually compatible with SKX007 parts. Reference Number: SRPE51, SRPE53, SRPE55, SRPE57, SRPE58, SRPE60, SRPE61, SRPE63, SRPE65, SRPE67, SRPE69

You’d want to upgrade your crystal from Hardlex to the much better Sapphire glass, and you can with our flat or double-domed variants . These are more scratch-resistant and are coated with anti-reflective coating that makes the SRPE even more legible in bright environments. These watches are reliable, affordable, and there are many to choose from, and now with the Uncle Seiko bracelet releases, you have more options than ever! Another good thing about it is not about the watch itself, but the community it fostered. For many, the SKX007 was the affordably priced gateway watch into the world of watch modding and collecting, bringing hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people together through a hobby. And that, modfam, is just beautiful. The SRPD and SRPE lines are more appealing to the new generation of watch collectors, with their more sleek and minimalist constructions and variety of OEM designs, not to mention the collaborations with other pop culture brands. They have a clear vision and demographic in mind for the Seiko 5 Sports, and we believe it can succeed despite the persisting demand for the SKX.You can describe the SRPE as being simple, but well-executed as a watch. It still has a presence on the wrist, though not as overt as its diving predecessor. The non-rotating bezel is minimalist, making it almost like a field watch in appearance, especially the ones that come standard in a NATO strap. While the new Seikos are available on bracelet or a NATO strap, the SRPE51 comes with the former. The bracelet on the whole is quite jangly, unaided by hollow endlinks that don’t fit the watch perfectly. On the plus side, the sizing links are secured with simple split pins, making adjustments a snap. At the end of the day, I don’t need that much out of a bracelet, other than to size well and stay closed. This does both. And if you need more, I’m sure the aftermarket hordes will come out with some sturdier alternatives. namokiMODS does have a few parts available for SRPE modding already, starting with the case. If you don’t wish to buy a brand new watch just to take it apart and build a new one, you can always start with a bare modding case, like our Polished SRPE Pilot Case . It already comes with a matching bezel and crown to make it easier to work with!

Seiko is a great place to start for someone who either just wants a great timepiece at an affordable price, or for someone who wants to dip their toes in the world of watches, in particular mechanical watches. In addition to that, a popular start is the Seiko 5 collection, which includes sporty and robust timepieces. That said, everything else in the Seiko 5 Sports collection is incompatible. You can still swap out the hands, dial and movement with mod parts made for the SKX007 but aside from that, nothing else. That is why we are releasing SRPE mod parts that are in their own separate category from the SKX/SRPD parts. The SKX007 just has way more mod parts that are available for it compared to the newer Seiko 5 Sports series. We think this might be due to the fact that there were only 2 SKX007 variants when it was released, making it the perfect canvas for Seiko modders to exercise their creativity and customise one to their liking. Why not soften the blow with a watch that isn’t pretending to be a dive watch? Give us a watch that is not a just a pretender, but a sensible variation. A watch with perfect proportions (40 and 20, say what??), without any natural claim to a screw-down crown, or an ISO rating. Give us a watch that just… makes sense? The lug-to-lug distance is comparable to the SKX/5KX at 44mm. Even though that dimension hasn’t changed much, the wearer wouldn’t notice too much of a difference because the SKX/5KX case had a relatively short lug-to-lug to begin with. The crown guards have been carried over and have always been one of my favorite things about the SKX case. The bottom crown guard has a little swoop to it that adds some flair.

There’s not much to compare between the SRPE and SRPD watches because they are all under the Seiko 5 Sports mantle. Aside from the watch being mounted on the bezel, these two are pretty much the same. Numerous applied elements on the dial add depth that makes them pop out beautifully. One of my favorite applied logos has always been a Seiko applied logo. For whatever reason, those 5 letters look fantastic when applied to a dial. Seiko did that here as well as bringing in applied markers. The Seiko timepiece collection features the iconic logo across a multitude of designs, from chunky masculine automatic watches to futuristic technological designs, slim and delicate ladies' bands to sparkling fashion pieces and much more. For a watch that guarantees accuracy for everyday use to a gorgeous yet practical occasion accessory, Seiko's attractive designs will complete your look no matter what your personal taste or style. The size hits a sweet spot of 42.5mm too, which is a great size for most wrists and doesn’t look overly large - a common theme with diving watches. A small detail to mention is the crown position at 4, making it more comfy to wear as the crown and crown guard will not directly hit your wrists.

The words instant classic get thrown around a lot when it comes to watches. I don’t want to outright say that this watch is an instant classic, but it has all the makings of one. It’s affordable and has styling and wearability we haven’t seen from Seiko in recent years. Seiko has been pushing upmarket for the last few years and it is starting to appear that the new line of Seiko 5 watches is what consumers in the affordable space have been clamoring for from the brand. The movement has a specified accuracy of +45 / -35 seconds per day. This is not too bad, but owners have reported a much better accuracy in practice. In addition, if you want even better accuracy, it is possible to have a watchmaker regulate it. After being initially smitten by the new Seiko 5 Sport, I went through a brief period where I felt conflicted: How could I lust after a watch that seemed so simple, and worse yet, already had legions of lookalikes?Leather strap watches tend to fit without a problem for most wearers. However, watches fitted with metal bracelets often need adjusting to get the perfect fit.
