He had been encouraged in his natural artistic creativity by a kindergarten teacher in Syracuse, but Carle struggled with the more restrictive schools in Germany. To that point, it is always important to ask kids questions, and to really give them the floor to speak.

He painted tissue paper and cut it into shapes for a living, and inspired an entire world by doing so.In a 2012 survey of School Library Journal readers, The Very Hungry Caterpillar was voted the second most popular illustrated children's book. In 2009, Putnam/ Philomel published Artist To Artist: 23 Major Illustrators Talk to Children about Their Art, with contributors including Mitsumasa Anno, Quentin Blake, Carle, Tomie dePaola, Leo Lionni, Barry Moser, Robert Sabuda, Maurice Sendak and Rosemary Wells.

He worked as an art director at an advertising agency early in his career but soon began working as an illustrator, publishing "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? Before they start gluing, all or most of the shapes should be pre-cut so they can plan how they will arrange and glue the shapes to create the pictures.
