Then one day as Mia is surveying what will be the nursery, she discovers seven words etched into the skirting in a childish scrawl. Building and supporting a community of self-published authors dedicated to both sharing experiences and le Officially 15k Members Strong & Climbing!! Mia and Finn buy a fixer upper sight unseen and are excited to start fixing it up. When they arrive, it is worse than they imagined. But Finn and his dad, David, can do much of the work themselves. John Marrs is a favourite author for many, I'd only read The One previously so was eager to read more. The characters. A bunch of vacuous and unlikeable ones that make ridiculous decisions purely for the author to move the story on. I didn’t care about any of them. They weren’t even interesting in an unlikeable way. They were just nasty wafer thin and silly.

Mia and Finn are living with Finn's parents Debbie and Dave while the derelict house they've bought is renovated. It's hard going as Debbie and Mia can barely stand each other, then Mia falls unexpectedly pregnant. As the house progresses, Mia discovers a phrase scratched into the skirting in one of the bedrooms..."I will save them from the attic" and what started as their dream home turns into a nightmare... As Mia's obsession with what happened in the house intensifies, she struggles to bond with her baby and distances herself from Finn who doesn't understand why she cares so much. On a scale of 1 to 10, how disturbed are you after reading that quotation? Wrong! The correct answer is 11. Your level of disturbance is off the charts. Mia and Finn are busy turning a derelict house into their dream home when Mia unexpectedly falls pregnant. But just when they think the house is ready, Mia discovers a chilling message scored into a skirting board: I WILL SAVE THEM FROM THE ATTIC. Following the clue up into the eaves, the couple make a gruesome discovery: their dream home was once a house of horrors. Just when you think it’s about as bad as it could be, there’s a new twist in the plot that makes their situation even more untenable. It’s hard to feel sympathy for any of them, trapped in sins of their own commission, omission, or both. Though things aren’t too graphic, we know that a lot of bad things happen to kids. If you are sensitive about this, be prepared for it. What made it easy to read is the writing (and not in a good way). I wasn’t the least bit affected, as the whole thing felt distant.

Mia and Finn are hoping to turn an old, dilapidated house into their dream home. But when Mia finds a message etched into the wall, they realize that their attic has a horrific history in its past. Now with their new born, Mia becomes obsessed with seeking answers. That’s when secrets spill, truths emerge, threatening their marriage and her bonding with her baby. Creative storyline. Characters that were kind of awful, but not in a way that made me dislike it, but more in a way that worked for the story to where the characters matched with what was taking place between this messy secretive family. When Finn met Mia in London, he was already engaged to his long-time sweetheart. But Mia was so different – outspoken, funny, confident, independent – that he married her instead. Debbie and Dave, Finn’s parents, loved Emma, sweet and pliable, and they can’t warm up to Mia. Despite several years of marriage and fertility treatments, she’s yet to carry a baby to term, which is a kernel of misery for both the would-be mother and grandmother. Since reading What Lies Between Us, I have been anxiously awaiting John Marrs’ next dark and disturbing psychological thriller.

I can’t read one of his books and not rate it this because with every new book he continues to exceed my expectations.

The story itself is filled with twists and red herrings that will keep you guessing - is it or isn't it? - leaving you wondering if you are able to figure them out. I did work out who the anonymous narrator was through a few drip-fed clues and things that were left unsaid. But that wasn't the only twist to be revealed...there are plenty more to come! Mia unexpectedly falls pregnant, after all the failed efforts of the past, and she and Debbie establish an unspoken ceasefire. Mia is still working at her PR job, remotely though you don’t hear much about it. It doesn’t seem to be part of her life. Nor do you get more than glancing references to the work on the house that occupies Dave and Finn. In fact, if you’re looking for a book that offers well-rounded characters, as well as a chilling plot, this may not satisfy. I had a few issues with some inconsistencies as well as repetition. Each chapter is told through a different character’s perspective, sometimes replaying the same events through a different viewpoint. It’s understandable if some would want that other character’s opinion but I found it unnecessary.
