Description

The cooler temperatures in the UK means that we are not able to grow beautiful lime trees out in the garden. However, this doesn’t mean we can’t grow them at all. Most commercially sold citrus plants are grafted to ensure they fruit at an early age. Ungrafted plants may take up to ten years to fruit, so make sure the plant you’re buying is mature enough to crop. The easiest way to be certain is to buy a plant that is actually in flower and/or fruiting. If your tree is too dry you may notice that the leaves are turning crispy and falling, if too wet the leaves may start to go limp and curl before falling. When you water the plant, you need to ensure the top of the soil is bone dry, make sure you water the whole root ball all the way through until water runs right through the pot and out of the bottom. Always let the excess water drain away and never leave the plant standing in water. Expect to water much more frequently in summer than in winter.

Citrus plants require a very similar watering regime as any other houseplant. In the winter, allow the soil to dry out between watering, as they do not like overwatering. However, in the summer, they need to be watered more regularly, possibly once or twice a week. Ideally water with rainwater if available. Westland’s Houseplant Watering Indicator is a great way to monitor whether your orange tree needs watering or not. Use a indoor watering can to water your orange tree that has a long stem spout for targeted watering. Spray Yates Nature's Way Fruit Fly Control over the lower foliage, or a band around the trunk, each week, until all fruit is harvested. It attracts and kills both Queensland and Mediterranean Fruit Fly using a combination of a protein and sugar-based bait and an insecticide derived from a naturally occurring soil bacteria. When there is no danger of frost, citrus plants like to be outside through the summer months. However, they must be acclimatised gradually to the new light level, by being moved first to a slightly shaded area outside for 2-3 weeks before being put in their sheltered, sunny spot for the summer. All citrus trees will benefit from a slightly nitrogen rich or balanced NPK fertilizer that also has some micro-nutrients in it like: It can take 12–18 months for a newly planted vine to reach fruiting size. Prune vines to control their size and spread, and to allow sunlight to filter through and help ripen fruit. Is passionfruit easy to grow? In general, you should be doing your citrus fertilizing about once every one to two months during active growth (spring and summer) and once every two to three months during the tree’s dormant periods (fall and winter). As the tree gets older, you can skip dormant season fertilizing and increase the amount of time between active growth fertilizing to once every two to three months. If yes, move your tree away from any doors, windows or windowsills that could be causing fluctuations in the room's temperature.
