It is not until the end of the book that we learn of the tragic death of Aura...how she actually died. Throughout the book, I wondered about it, but I thought Goldman's method was perfect since it kept me held close to the story, compelled to know the details of their relationship, drawn into his personal voyage through crisis, loss and grief to the apex of his life's worst nightmare. I respected his handling of her death. The voice of Hope, set in 1994, is reminiscent of a much older voice, replete with daddy-Os and ya digs. It is also incredibly inconsistent from one part to the next and in the ending scene, the lost 80s dialect is nonexistent.

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a mystery thriller with unique characters and twists to the end. I had such high hopes for this book, but I am incredibly disappointed. And frankly, I’m surprised that a co-authored books could be so bad given the fact that it has multiple brains behind it! I’m going to release some spoilers here. So she isn’t overwhelmed by feminist infighting? She laughs. “I think there is a more robust debate about feminism in the UK – what a great problem to have.”I didn’t care much about the romance. Romance in horror just feels out of place to me. Either make it more of an important thing, or leave it out entirely. What I did really like, though, was the uncertainty of whether their feelings for each other were real or if they were being influenced by whatever was going on. (I won’t spoil, you’ll have to read it. *winks*)

I found the writing to be a little hit and miss at times, but for the most part it served its purpose just fine. Some of the dialogue and internal monologues were a little bit cringey at times it took me out of the story, but not enough to make me want to stop reading. There was also a tiny bit of inconsistency with the coping strategies the protagonist uses at the beginning of the book seemingly disappearing a few chapters in. My first impression of this book was that it was magnificent. I could only read a tiny bit at a time because of the crushing weight of the loss that the author experienced after the untimely death of his wife. The book gets two stars for this part alone. The rest was crap. Hay una parte brutal casi al final de las poco más de 400 páginas que te dan la certeza de porqué era necesario acompañar al narrador durante todo ese viaje.Even though it became clear immediately that the the bio-dad was shady AF, I was curious to find out how all the pieces fit together, and felt it was worth reading for that reason. Bobbie wondered if that's how long you truly live for - until the last person who remembers you, until the final bouquet on your grave.” I was simply spellbound by his story and his prose. Although this book is non-fiction, you will be instantly gripped by the love story and the angst of it. It is a book that haunts you.

VERDICT This collection is inspirational, uplifting, and encouraging for readers of all genders. Elliott may not think of herself as a poet, but her creativity and deft wielding of rich language prove otherwise. There were other tiny pet peeves I had with the story that brought my rating down a little. There was a side story about her losing her job that was mostly ignored, and her husband appeared to be non-existent for most of the book. Just tiny things I think if tweaked could’ve made the book a little better and more cohesive. Opening up multiple avenues of drama just to almost ignore them was a little frustrating. I enjoyed the ending though and the hope of it all, how it rounded off quite nicely.Say Her Name" is a magnificent tribute to Goldman's love, Aura, his precious young wife of only 4 years. Her life affected him in such a way as to brand his heart and soul eternally, and he shows that in an eloquence of language and writing that is timeless, heart-wrenching, and a memorial of their relationship. Proust se dio a la búsqueda del tiempo perdido y a ello dedicó su obra. Joyce se afanó en el lenguaje como personaje en una etapa final y en lograr un día. Un solo día. Dropped threads/ Plot holes More info on the medical experiments could have easily upped the creepy factor, but it’s glossed over. The whole thing of WHY her bio-dad wanted Eva to take a DNA test in the first place is unclear. The husband’s involvement. Sugar’s dealings with Ronnie. The doctor job that she’s conveniently suspended from (otherwise the story arc might have had to be about work/life balance. Bobbie and her friends Naya attend a prestigious boarding school. On Halloween Night, they are dared to summon the ghost of Bloody Mary by saying her name 5 times into a mirror. Bobbie, Naya and a boy named Caine agree to the game, as they have never believed in ghosts. After they perform the summoning, strange things begin to happen and they realize that the legend of Bloody Mary may be true after all. Bobbie wondered if that's how long you truly live for - until the last person who remembers you, until the final bouquet on your grave."

Bobbie was an okay character, although I didn’t think that Bobbie and her friends were particularly bright. Saying ‘Bloody Mary’ five times in front of the mirror is just stupid. Even if it’s not true, why tempt fate? Aura's mother Juanita blamed Goldman for his wife's death. The memoir begins with the tone and register of a murder mystery with the author casting himself in the role of the confessional protagonist: "If I were Juanita, I know I would have wanted to put me in prison, too. Though not for the reasons she and her brother gave." Goldman was present, after all; he has no alibi. Aura's mother, Juanita, who made every sacrifice to have her only daughter, a PhD student in Spanish literature, educated in Texas and New York, spoke her final words to her ageing son-in-law over her Aura's dying body: "Esto es tu culpa" – "This is your fault." After the memorial service Goldman was ostracised, and Juanita and her brother tried to have him charged with responsibility for Aura's death. Though it sometimes toys with the tone of a statement for the defence, the book is never mea culpa, however, except to the extent that Goldman cannot help but see himself as in some way an accessory to the accident, an unplumbed well of "if onlys". It is always, rather, mi amor. As much as you want to laugh it off, you will end up believing it and losing sleep if you are the lone inhabitant of your room. Her characters are always so well drawn and these ones are no exception. I felt for Eva from the start. I loved the twists and turns they really kept me reading and on the edge of my seat too.

Reader Reviews

Well, I don't think I'll get any sleep tonight. I made the mistake of reading this book at night, alone, during a rain storm, in front of my glass book case. At first it wasn't scary, I was mildly interested. Four boarding school teens take on an urban legend dare only to find themselves taken one by one by a vengeful demonic ghost. Not scary at all. Why tf would she symbolically cut her hair while being drowned instead of the hands drowning her, which are OBVIOUSLY on her body, not just her hair? You can’t drown someone by holding their HAIR DOWN guys.
