Narrated from Galatea’s PoV, the story begins with her confined to a hospital bed, her plight a result of a failed effort to escape her controlling and obsessive husband with their daughter Paphos. Here with Galatea, Miller exchanges the character’s traditional role as an obedient and subversive girl for a woman who’s trapped, controlled, abused, and desperate for freedom.

Even though her first attempt at escaping his clutches with her daughter failed, the second time was final. In Ovid’s telling, Pygmalion is a gifted sculptor whose encounters with sex workers leave him so disgusted that he forgoes female companionship.This beautifully written commentary on “male fantasy” and male anger directed at independent women brings this myth down to earth. In ancient Greece, a skilled marble sculptor has been blessed by a goddess who has given his masterpiece — the most beautiful woman the town has ever seen — the gift of life.

He prays for her transformation into a real person, but the story diverges from the traditional happily-ever-after narrative.

The feminist light she shines on these events never distorts their original shape; it only illuminates details we hadn't noticed before. In fact, the 1964 musical My Fair Lady starring Audrey Hepburn is only two retellings removed from the myth of Galatea by way of playwright George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion. Miller has always enjoyed critical acclaim, winning the 2012 Orange Prize for “The Song of Achilles. Miller’s new, more nuanced characterization of Galatea is the highlight of this story, but unfortunately she is the only multidimensional character.

However, it’s just been published in November 2022 (and earlier this year outside the US) as a beautiful little hardcover that’s just 49 pages long plus a wonderful six-page afterword. While this is a rather small book, and short story, I think it was worth it to have a pretty copy for my library. Lau's] gift for writing accumulative insanities creates the same dizzying effect as a good cleaning.
