Description

Samantha Worthington is still being harassed by her jailed ex-husband's parents, who are trying to wrest away custody of her son Carl; this leads to plenty of excitement and danger. A friend to many, whose daughter was murdered several years earlier and whose wife has recently died of cancer All of this had me intrigued and interested in what was going to happen next. But as more people were introduced in the story I found it harder to keep everyone and everything straight. There are a TON of characters in this book. There were a few times that I got characters mixed up and it took a bit of time to get things figured out again. There is a cliff hanger at the end that leaves me wanting to find out more. I understand this is how the first book in the series ended as well. My advice to anyone is if this book seems confusing or there are two many characters, just give it time, write down some facts and characters if you need to, but do not give up on this book. This is a very well thought out book. I found the writing to be very engaging and intelligent. I really love books that I can't figure out all the way. This book kept me guessing and I still don't know what is going to be revealed next.

We also have David Hardwood, who was the "main character" in Broken Promises returning in this novel as another major character. He is now working as a campaign manager for Randall Finley, has his parents living with him and trying to win over Sam Worthington. Cal is also trying to help Sam who is being threatened by her ex-boyfriend's parents and want to kidnap her son. And, then we get a cliffhanger.. Most of the story lines come to a conclusion in a very satisfying way, so this 'could' be a stand-alone. But .. there is one mystery that remains and the book gives just the slightest hint that more is coming. The next book is FINAL ASSIGNMENT (novella e-book only 1.5) and then comes FAR FROM TRUE (Bk 2) ... just in case you want to add these to your wish list. Cal has a difficult time convincing Chandler's mother, Greta, that this is no job for a private investigator. But, she wants him to find dirt on someone at the school so she can provide them with an incentive to remove the suspension from Chandler's record. David is not cut out for all the drama. He had enough of it with his late wife, Jan, and the episode with Marla and her baby. Even his former reporting days had not prepared him for this kind of unrelenting stress. As I mentioned in my tweet this week to Lisa Unger and Linwood Barclay. I want a joint collaboration to combine both fictional upstate New York troubled cities Unger's (The Hollows) with Barclay’s (Promise Falls). Possibly Unger’s Eloise or Finley (psychics) could head over to Promise Falls to help solve this #23 Mystery. Can you image this two cast of characters in one book, plus the creativity of Unger and Barclay? Explosive!I thought this was an exceptional Barclay book. There are many threads to follow, but it's so well written, the reader doesn't get lost. The characters are so substantial they could be your neighbors. There are many twists and turns ... some of them are highly surprising. I am really enjoying this series and I have been a big fan of Linwood Barclay for years. This is the third book in the Promise Falls Trilogy counting the novella. Like a less surreal Twin Peaks, this is a compellingly grotesque portrait of the American dream in meltdown. * SUNDAY EXPRESS * Because Broken Promise seems to be the first in a series I can forgive the thin and caricature-like characters. The lies and deceit make me wonder who in this town isn't a crappy person or involved in some underhanded dealings. Because virtually everything I want to talk about in reference to this book is virtually a plot twist, I'll refrain from going further.

He can’t believe Marla’s capable of such violence and finds himself believing her story about the angel so sets about trying to prove her innocence. During his inquiries David speaks to the dead woman's husband and doctor, and tries to find the baby's nanny - who seems to be missing. As the story unfolds private detective Cal Weaver (a character in previous Barclay novels) is caught up in the drama when Adam's Chalmers' daughter, Lucy Brighton, hires him. She thinks someone has been sneaking around her deceased father's house. Weaver makes a startling discovery in the Chalmers' home, a finding that soon interests the police as well. The book ends with a delicious cliffhanger. The main mystery has not been solved, as the killings may be connected to an older case. There is a message someone is trying to send. Is it revenge? Is the killer walking among them, and someone they all know? And oh, more with hidden secrets, yet to come to the surface. I am dying for the next installment! Here is hoping I can land an ARC, as the suspense is killing me. Having been a long-time fan of Linwood Barclay, I thought I would take some time to fly through one of his short stories. Having been enthralled with BROKEN PROMISES, I was sure that this shorter tale would captivate me just as much. I was not disappointed, as the town fleshes itself out, with new and interesting characters ready to offer their own angle to life in a smaller city. The story was succinct and the development flowed nicely. I could see Barclay building up to a grand finale, only to have everything come crashing down in the end. Stellar work all around. Broken Promise is the first installment of the Promise Falls trilogy, set in upstate New York. My only other Barclay read is Tap on the Window, but that book and this novel are enough for me to see that Mr. Barclay is a master storyteller. I really enjoyed this novel.

This is the first book of a series and various characters seem likely to show up in future stories. These include David's mom Arlene - who's starting to show signs of dementia; I would recommend this book to fans of mystery thrillers. This is a fast paced novel with a lot of action and twists and turns to keep things interesting. I have read quite a few novels by Linwood Barclay and I think that this book lives up to what I have come to expect from this author. I can't wait to see what happens next in Promise Falls. A special thank you to Berkley/NAL and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. *4.5 Stars*I'm not going to discuss the plot. I'd have to write a book, and you wouldn't believe me if I told you anyway. This book is the second in a trilogy. I read the first one, Broken Promise, in August of 2015. I'd kept notes on the first book, but it seems I really didn't need to because they didn't help with this book. Things that should have been remembered were mentioned in this book, and I was very surprised that I recalled them. Michael’s mom is a friend of the family, and Suzanne is now calling Cal for help. Michael did not come home. He is missing. Now in the middle, he is trying to help. A rundown drive-in movie theater, the Constellation collapses, killing four people and injuring others. Demolition was not scheduled for the following week. The owner had sold the property to a developer, Mancini Homes and he and his wife were headed to Florida for retirement. A shootout at the laundromat, an attempt to kidnap a child, and we are just getting started. How didTHE TWENTY-THREE compare toBROKEN PROMISE andFAR FROM TRUE ?:I felt that I got to know the characters more fully in THE TWENTY-THREE and became immersed in their community as if I was one of their neighbors. The twists and turns in the plot continued but I felt it was more robust in THE TWENTY-THREE than the previous two. After reading the previous two books, this finale drove me, as a reader, to keep going to get the unanswered questions resolved.

ITV Press Centre (25 October 2013). " Winners unmasked at Specsavers Crime Thriller Awards 2013 on ITV3". ITV Press Centre. Retrieved 19 February 2014 During the local drive-in's last-ever triple feature, a mysterious explosion topples the screen, killing four people. It's not the only bizarre incident shaking up the New York town of Promise Falls, a popular suicide spot where all lives seem at risk.

The characters in this book could be your neighbours, your friends even. It raises the question, just how well do you really know these people; your friends, your family, your acquaintances? What are they keeping hidden from you? Do you really know them, or do you only know the façade they present?
