For example, the easy-start feature is far more preferable to the pulling/recoil method of the petrol lawn mower which, if you’ve ever used you will know, can be a nightmare and often painful to start. The easy-on safety switch works like a charm. WORX WG743E.1 User Manual The ability to take advantage of Worx's PowerShare battery system is a big pull, too. Being able to use the same batteries and chargers for all your power tools makes storage and use more streamlined. The Worx 40V cordless can be used in Turbo or Eco Modes. Eco helps the battery last longer, although after four or five uses I still had a third of a battery left, according to the indicator. It lets you choose to cut from anywhere between 20mm to 70mm with 6 separate cutting lengths. Just make sure you don’t set it at the shortest setting from the start when the lawn has significant growth, instead start at a higher setting and gradually work your way down. This gives the areas of small grass time to catch up with the long, resulting in a more even and healthy looking lawn.

The only issue with the WORX is the availability of parts and support should you need it. Even replacement blades can be difficult to find. I even spotted a roller at the rear for those who want a striped effect — I’ll leave it to you more confident mowers to test that one out! If there’s a negative, I’d say the Worx WG779E does become sluggish over long, wet grass, even with the reinforced axels, which can cause clogging in the collector. But overall, I found it to be a reliable, affordable cordless mower that is easy to use and store. Pros WORX introduced the two 20v batteries in 2018 to enable compatibility with their other cordless power tools of which there are 40 in the range. The two WORX batteries can be charged at the same time and the WORX WG779E.2 comes with an eco mode for lighter cuts, reducing the power and extending the cutting time.

Mark Haley

Worx have built up an impressive selection of tools that can be powered by their 20V batteries. Most tools take just one 20V battery – we are talking their strimmer, leaf blower, handheld vacuum, drills and even a pressure washer – but the mowers use two for optimum run time. The 4.0Ah also weighs more than the smaller, 2.0Ah so this might affect your decision if you are looking to powershare the battery with other Worx tools. While a heavier battery is not that noticeable in a mower, you might want to use the lighter 2.0Ah in things like cordless drills. However, the 4.0Ah is comparable in size and weight to the large batteries I have used on cordless drills from multiple brands and well worth the extra expense if you want the benefit or longer cutting times (a must for larger gardens). In comparison, the Flymo Mighti-Mo 300 takes the same 2 hours to charge as the WG779E.2 but the the WORX will last longer with the ability to cut a lawn up to 350 m². This is surprising as the Flymo Mighti-Mo 300 weighs 3 kg less than the WG779E.2.

You can easily change the cutting height from two centimetres up to seven centimetres, using a handle by the front wheels. My lawn was a little overgrown before the first use, so to avoid battling with long grass, I set the mower to it's highest length to trim it ahead of trying a lower grade. This was unnecessary based on use since – the mower makes light work of even dense couch grass and weeds that have been left to run wild. Of course, the cordless design means that you’ll no longer have to avoid mowing over the cord which, as we know, only serves to get in the way and often poses a safety hazard. Safety Features Furthermore, the WORX WG743E.1 boasts an edging ability that truly is second to none – never again will you have portions of uncut grass around the perimeter of the lawn. There are six height positions to choose from, with the minimum being 20 millimetres while the highest is 70 millimetres. You can start at a higher setting and go down as you progress so that small grass will not miss a piece of the action. WORX WG779E.2 Cutting Diameter

As long as you’re a regular mower, this cordless classic’s hard to beat

Metal blades are generally sharper and provide a cleaner cut to the grass blade, resulting in a neater, tidier and superior finish to your lawn and garden. The metal blade on the WG779E.2 can be sharpened when needed unlike plastic blades. One thing the Flymo 300 scores slightly higher is the height adjustment. On the Flymo 300 there is a single lever on the top side of the mower with a large handle, this makes adjusting the height very smooth and easy. The height adjustment on the WG779E.2 is smaller and located towards the front of the mower. Adjustment seems to be that bit more difficult with the WORX and not so nicely balanced as with the Flymo. This is no big deal as you are not constantly adjusting the height but worth a mention anyway. The rotary blades are made from steel which is an extremely durable metal so you know that, even if you run into an unexpected obstacle, you’re not running the risk of causing any significant damage. What I really like about the WORX WG779E.2 is the addition of a removable safety key that disables the lawn mower to help prevent accidental starting. This is a nice feature not found on similar cordless mowers that gives peace of mind around children. The key has a cord that is attached to the handle so making it almost impossible to misplace. As someone who has tested and reviewed many different lawn mowers, I was eager to get the WORX WG779E.2 cordless mower out on the lawn. This is one of the top-selling cordless models in the UK, but I wanted to see for myself just how well it performed.

Like many cordless lawn mowers, the WORX WG779E.2 is powered by two Lithium-ion batteries (40V in total) and electrical motor which will charge in around 2 hours. The batteries are removed from the mower for charging and storage. After giving the WORX WG779E.2 cordless lawn mower a thorough testing on my lawn, I’m well impressed with its performance. This mower is lightweight yet robust, making it a breeze to manoeuvre around landscaping and use for the full mowing session. Its build quality feels rather sturdy for the price point. The WORX WG743E.1 is an excellent option if you’re looking for a diverse lawn mower, and this is all thanks to the variable height adjustments that it offers. If you’re conscious about how eco-friendly your tools are then you’ll be pleased to discover that this product gives off zero emissions and even better, its ultra-quiet function means that noise pollution is kept to a minimum too.
