The Dell G3 15 and the Dell G5 15 SE both start out as bread-and-butter cheap gaming laptops, but the G5 15 SE can be configured into a premium machine. Therefore, I can only rate it a seven in this review. Dell G3 15 3579 Processor (CPU) Performance Review I produced 57 words per minute on the 10fastfingers.com typing test, falling below my typical 60-wpm average. The keys travel 1.2 millimeters and require 71 grams of actuation force. We normally look for travel in the 1.5-to-2.0-mm range and a minimum force of 60 grams. At most, we're able to measure a demand spike of 132 W from the medium-sized (~15 x 7.5 x 2.5 cm) 130 W AC adapter when running both Prime95 and FurMark simultaneously. This high of a consumption steadily drops over time before plateauing at about 113 W as shown by our graphs below. There are four configurations to choose from, with each one boasting an 8th Gen processor, ranging from i5 to i7. In terms of GPU, you’ll find a Nvidia GTX 1050 graphics card in the base model and a meatier GTX 1060 in the most expensive. The medium-quality settings show that you can dial down some bells and whistles to achieve better than 60fps, though, which is an acceptable solution for a budget machine.The G3 15 scored a rough 3.5 out of 11 on the SteamVR performance test, which matches the marks from the MSI 7REX and the Legion Y520 but is crushed by the 6.6 category average. The TUF Gaming FX504 scored even lower, with 2.7. While you can theoretically use an Oculus Rift with the G3 15 thanks to Oculus' Asynchronous Spacewarp technology, it's probably not a good idea. Dell G3 15 performance The G3 15’s decent (but not great) overall speed is demonstrated again on these tests. It’s slower than the competition on two of these tests, though none is exactly ready to churn through media editing or creation. The budget tier isn’t where you look for excellence with these workloads, but they can make it through if you’re willing to wait. Graphics Tests As much as I would love to attribute the word ‘attractive’ to the Dell G3 15 3579, unfortunately, I can’t. It is fair to say that Dell G3 15 3579 is the most unattractive gaming laptop I have seen. These results are seriously impressive for a gaming laptop. In fact, you’ll be hard-pressed to find another that can match for it for both power and battery life. Why buy the Dell G3 15? According to our colorimeter, the G3 15's panel covers a crushingly low 61 percent of the sRGB color gamut. (We consider anything 100 percent and above to be acceptable.) The Asus TUF Gaming FX504 and the Lenovo Legion Y520 covered only 66 and 68 percent, respectively, while the MSI GL62M 7REX took the throne with an impressive 153 percent.

All three configurations come with a dedicated VRAM to boost the GPU performance. GTX 1050 and GTX 1050 Ti GPU come with a 4 GB GDDR5 VRAM while the Max-Q GPU comes with a 6 GB GDRR5 VRAM. After the G3 15 streamed an HD video for 15 minutes, however, the underside reached only 91 degrees (under our threshold), and the lower left hit 98 degrees (not far off from the threshold). The center of the keyboard measured 89 degrees, and the touchpad hit 82 degrees. Dell G3 15 software and warranty Despite having a great score of 6509K for Visual Colour Temperature, the Dell G3’s display still looks rather warm when compared to other laptops. This isn’t helped by the dismal colour range, with just 51.8% of sRGB colour gamut. The Dell G3 is just not designed for image or video editing, being unable to reproduce colours accurately enough to be a worthwhile asset for such creative work.We see a respectable, if unremarkable, battery-life result here. The Nitro 5 is a big outlier, while the rest are clustered in the six-to-seven-hour range. Six hours of battery life in the described scenario is good for a gaming laptop, though in case you’re unaware, you won’t be able to play games for that long off the charger. Gaming drains battery much faster than general use (word processing, web browsing, and even watching videos like our test), so you’d only be able to play for a couple hours off the charger (and with diminished performance). The rest of the system is typical of its price range. The plastic chassis, treble-heavy speakers, slow SD reader, 1x1 WLAN, and budget NVMe SSD are common on budget gaming laptops. The one area where the Dell G3 doesn’t stink of budget is the performance. For the price, this is one of the best performing gaming laptops on the market. On these two games, the G3 15 is roughly the third or fourth best performer on average, which fits the on-paper hierarchy of the GPUs in use. However, the Nitro 5 is less expensive and delivers just about the same performance (though its screen is not high-refresh), so that’s not the best outcome for the G3 15 in that head to head.
