If you’re looking for dreamy, soft backgrounds, you also won’t quite get that due to the bokeh on this lens. The Sony a9 III is the world's first full-frame mirrorless camera to feature a global electronic shutter with simultaneous readout. Even though all the 1 Nikkor prototypes were in shiny metal, I have a feeling that this lens is plastic. But we don’t park next to someone at the mall, get out of our cars and ridicule them for choosing to drive a Nissan Cube do we (I think the Cube is cool by the way)? Which one is assigned to aperture, making it one of the most important controls for an aperture priority shooter like myself?

The axial CA removal tool in Nikon’s Capture NX2 works well, and so does the CA removal feature in Lightroom. Wonder if it would with careful use be an (almost macro) lense, in the sense of getting close to flowers with a nice smooth background. My current one is my second copy and is a little bit better than my first but never the less – i find it wanting. Having a hybrid-type AF system employing both contrast and phase-detect sensors, Nikon 1 cameras and lenses are known for their super-fast and precise focusing.your photos and videos have extremely shallow depth of field—your subject will be in perfect focus, but its background will be softly blurred. Getting this result isn’t the fault of this lens entirely, it’s just a mix of several factors all coming-together.

As you can notice below, the halos have different colors - magenta (red + blue) in front the focus point and green beyond. All content, design, and layout are Copyright © 1998–2024 Digital Photography Review All Rights Reserved. The rendering is nice as well despite not being on-par with lenses that were made for film or full-frame, it is what it is and it does its job beautifully despite all of the physical limitations imposed on its development. The photosite size is just too small, and the random nature of photons is going to definitely produce noise (quantum shot noise).

The first on-sensor phase detect autofocus at this scale, and they nailed it — focus was blazingly fast. Nikon has done a great job delivering a lens that can be used in low-light conditions with the 1-series cameras. As I’ve already mentioned, the Nikon HB-N101 lens hood, designed for the 1 Nikkor 10-30mm kit lens, works perfectly on the 18. mostly fits the bill, but it’s becoming expensive if you’re not an extremely patient auction watcher, and it has an assortment of other quirks mostly linked to its innovative stepper-motor micro-shutter (it DOES have a viewfinder, which is nice, but that makes its screen very small). It’s able to reliably track my subjects despite being dark and even when it had to guess where it went after something obstructed my subjects from view. It’s more of a enclosure than a tunnel, with the whole thing slanting in slightly to reveal an even narrower opening in its “roof. I have to confess that I don't use mine so much, being more of a wide shooter, or longer focal lengths, like the 32.

Combined with the fast operation, especially the AF, and the high burst rate this results in an enjoyable shooting experience (fast shooting with a light and small yet capable camera/lens combo), unparalleled by any camera or lens combination on the market. Also, it utilizes one aspherical element to control distortion and aberrations and has a rear focusing AF system. You’ll even see some of it by f/4 which is rather surprising since I expected it to get a lot better by this point. Unlike distortion, Nikon chose to have vignetting corrected in the camera when shooting JPG (or using Nikon's View NX or Capture NX software to convert NEFs). Just remember, you’re using a small sensor camera and that random photon noise isn’t really “fixed” by using a fast lens, so in low light you’ll still get some noise (mostly luminance). It’s the best that I have used so far, a lot better than the ones you could get from the other brand that prides in their film-presets. The V1 is not about having perfect smooth images, it has its own “look” and character that many really like. That wouldn’t make sense for general photography, but for the kid pics that I’m doing, it’s almost always nice to have a little subject separation. wide open even under most intensive sunlight, without needing to add bulk and weight by using an ND filter on your lens. If you want just about the smallest, lightest camera with a larger-than-campact sensor and a fast normal lens that won’t break the bank, then the J5, a four-year-old camera from a failed system, merits a serious look.
