Voted 3rd in a BBC poll of 25 to 45 year olds of all-time favourite children's shows Voted 6th in Channel 4's poll of the 100 greatest kid's TV shows Voted 10th most famous time-traveller by THE TIMES '.

A red suit of armour catches Mr Benn’s eye, and when he tries it on he finds himself transported to a land full of castles, dungeons and dragons! Large colourful illustrations and text that does not talk down to children (ie so I am not sick of reading the stories over the over again). Smasher first appears as an inmate in 123456789 Benn, and then after his release in Big-Top Benn and the new Mr Benn – Gladiator. Mr Benn puts on a spacesuit and jets off to different amazing planets – one with jewels, one with no colour and one brightly coloured planet where everyone has to wear a hat! Mr Benn helps the crew of a pirate ship, who are determined not to be pirates, turn their Captain into an honest man, and see that he gets a very different sort of treasure for his island: trees from a crew of gardeners whose ship the pirates pretend to capture, but actually rescue, during a storm.

Finding himself on a road in the process of being built, Mr Benn sees the Emperor pass by in his chariot who demands that Mr Benn be taken to the Arena to fight. Neon lights will be delivered in 2-4 weeks, as they are made in small batches and shipped separately from other items. In 2020, David won the British Book Awards Illustrator of the Year Award and BookTrust’s Lifetime Achievement Award. According to Mr Benn's Little Book of Life, very little of McKee's original artwork created for the television episodes exists today, as most of it was thrown into a rubbish skip in the 1970s.

I think it was because in the first book I drew myself looking out of the window, and I thought it would be quite nice to have him next door", said McKee. When the race begins it becomes apparent that Baron Burtrum has sabotaged all the other balloons, including Mr Benn's, which he has tied to a drain pipe. David McKee is the author and illustrator of over 100 children's books and the creator of several memorable characters besides Mr Benn, including Elmer the Patchwork Elephant and King Rollo. I particularly loved the way in which he shifts between his trademark, intricately detailed black ink drawings to a big colour splash page, often using large blocks of white space for extra emphasis and occasionally dropping in some bizarre 360 degree layouts as the cherry on top.

McKee’s brilliantly detailed pen and ink drawings in Gladiator use unusual perspective to give a kind of dreamlike feel whilst still containing lots of fascinating detail for kids that might be learning about Romans for the first time – and they’re funny too. However, the spells cast by Mr Benn do not turn out as expected, and Mr Benn eventually convinces the Queen that how the King looks is not important. McKee had the house "next door" at 54 Festing Road, where residents installed an engraved paving slab in his honour on 26 November 2009. Mr Benn comes up with an audacious plan and soon the prison is transformed into a place full of all colours of the rainbow. Mr Benn helps King Neptune and his mermaid friend outwit the crews of two submarines, who are out to find and photograph the King's pet sea monster.
