Description

There are 50 skeleton crosswords in this brand new book with all new puzzles, and the grid pattern for each of the puzzles is different so you'll be provided with a unique crossword and a unique challenge to work out the grid shape for every one of these puzzles. Using symmetry makes the solving process a lot easier, although it is still tricky - as you will need to battle solving the grid and the clues both at the same time. If you know the rules of sandwich sudoku but aren't sure how best to tackle a puzzle, this video walks through a puzzle and how to solve it to get you started. It should make finding your question easier for others and, the easier it is to find, the more likely someone is to answer it! For instance, if the solver notices that a number in the middle area of the grid refers to an Across clue, then the square to the left of that number must be black.

In the same way, if the number refers to a Down clue, the square immediately above it must be black.A lovely sudoku variant, sandwich sudoku gives you hints around the edge of the grid as to the location of the 1 and 9 in each row and column. How to Solve Skeleton CrosswordsOne of the more popular crossword variants is the skeleton crossword - which you may also know under names such as diagramless crosswords.

Exactly how much help these starters provide depends on the type of symmetry employed in the design of the grid. However because it is such a tricky solve, and can take a while to get going, then there is a particularly strong sense of satisfaction that comes with solving a skeleton crossword. You can use the fact that the crossword grid will be symmetrical (usually standard rotational symmetry - if not, then you will usually be told) to make further progress.

The featured issues were first published a few years ago and the competition is sadly no longer valid. Armed with the clues alone you will need to work out the grid pattern and the solution to the puzzle. This means that the few black squares and grid numbers that are given represent clues to the positions of others. At the start of the puzzle you will be given a few scraps of information: a few numbers in the grid corresponding to certain across and down clues, and a few squares too - but the rest is up to you. Note that other types of symmetry do not assist the solver quite as much as a fully symmetrical grid.

Particularly take a look at any clue numbers you have been given to start you off - are they going in an across or down direction (or both) and can you have a good guess at what their answers might be? Most crossword grids use central or rotational symmetry, but this is not what comes to most people's mind when the idea of symmetry is put forward. If the solver is able to enter an answer, the answer is likely to provide a clue to further black squares – the square immediately following the last letter of the answer will be black (unless the answer runs to the edge of the grid).
