This seems even more beyond our reach than praying for our enemies or doing good to them. If I could do this humanly impossible thing — namely, rejoice in being persecuted — then it would be possible to love my persecutors. If the miracle of joy in the midst of the horror of injustice and pain and loss could happen, then the miracle of love for the perpetrators could happen too. In reading mystical love poetry of this tradition, it is hard to determine whether a particular poem is meant for a tender young beloved, for the writer's husband or wife, for a spiritual teacher, for the Prophet Muhammad, or for God. The truth of the matter is that it is typically written for all of them, and all at once." I'm not an expert, therapist, pastor, teacher, or monk. I am merely a person going through my own mental and emotional health journey, hoping that I can pass on some of the wisdom and tools that I'd been blessed enough to learn along the way. And I truly believe that if we can help heal the hearts and minds of everyone on earth, we will solve every other problem known to man in the process. -- Zachary Levi The documentary featured several perspectives. While members of Pie’s family respect her act of forgiveness, it isn’t a sentiment that most of them support. Her brother, Erwin Herrera, couldn’t do the same but still supported Pie. In a shared conversation with Pie, he would tell her, “It was you, not me. You have this advocacy, belief, and inner sanctuary, but I’m not.” Jesus gives us further direction: “Pray for those who mistreat you.” He doesn’t mean to pray the imprecatory psalms! He means to pray sincerely for their well-being, which probably includes their conversion to Christ. You can rest assured that if the person does not repent, God will bring His righteous judgment upon him in due time. But rather than feeling sorry for yourself because you have been mistreated, feel compassion for this sinner who is headed for hell, if God does not intervene. Pray that God would be merciful in saving the person for His glory.

Radical Love, the two portraits, served as a kind of document of their time. The 30-portrait piece, Probably Chelsea, was always something different. It was meant to be shown after she was released, and was expected to be an exploration of different kinds of ideas around identity and challenging identity inscription. It was always intended for her to see upon being free. The line, “forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sinned against us,” eventually made see her through the faith-crushing ordeal. However, it was not as easy as it seemed because the crime involving her case was far from venial. If that is true, then the command to love is implicitly also a command to set our minds on things that are above — all that God promises to be for us — not on things that are on the earth (Colossians 3:2). Like me, the author uses faith in Christ to filter the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of situations. Ironically, like many schooled in Christianity—including myself—there’s a struggle to see how forgiveness in personally traumatic situations fit reality. It’s a story I wish I had heard in my early 20’s.How do we know when to confront? Can a wife confront her abusive husband and yet be loving and submissive? How? In an excerpt from her newly published book – Ethical Portraits – Hatty Nestor talks to Heather Dewey-Hagborg about her artwork that resists surveillance and gender binaries Heather Dewey-Hagborg, Radical Love, 2016; Genetic materials, custom software, 3D prints, documentation; each portrait 8 x 6 x 6 inches. Radical Love: From Separation to Connection with the Earth

While this book is marketed as a self-help book, it’s better viewed as a story of one man’s struggle, and from that we can empathize with him and extrapolate how we can forge our own paths forward in our own journeys. I’ve been helping the prison volunteers, those who take care of our prisoners. When that happened, I stopped volunteering. I refused to give all kinds of support and communication,” Cherry Pie shared.I never had any idea he was struggling so much in all this time. It's crazy to think how someone who could bring so much joy on TV and interviews etc could be going through such dark times. It goes to show you can't really know what anyone is going through, and we need to always remember to be kind and empathetic to everyone, and as Zac explains in this book, to ourselves. This is such an extraordinary memoir. Instead of being a by-the numbers reel of career highlights or a gossipy, dirty tell-all, Zachary Levi's memoir is a unique, earnest excavation and coverage of lessons he learned from self-work and therapy he did to recover from the complex psychological damage he succumbed to under the parenting of his extremely manipulative, gaslighting and unapologetic mother. He put in the hard work to understand the broken dynamics of his family tree to begin the healing of himself and others, and to truly do the work of love for others. He's also frank about the trials and doubts of being a network actor, about chasing auditions and performing on the parapet to chase external validation from authority figures in the industry to provide the scaffolding for self-esteem. In this book, one can truly see Zachary Levi's values shine and resonate.

Radical Love premiered at the World Economic Forum in January of 2016, if I remember correctly. That, especially from an activist angle, was a practical place to begin. The later work, Probably Chelsea, in a way is a kind of celebration. It’s a celebration of Chelsea’s release. It’s a celebration of the genetic commonality that we all share. In a sense it’s much lighter and more playful and fun. It’s more of an art installation, and also an opportunity for Chelsea to enter into being an artist, and being seen as an artist. In answer to the question, the reception has been positive. Dewey-Hagborg’s portraits seek to uncover the dominant narratives surrounding who is considered eligible and worthy of representation, and who is deemed the author of their own image, while shaking off outdated notions of genetic essentialism. They also demonstrate how solidarity with the incarcerated can begin with a single strand of hair. Heather Dewey-Hagborg and Chelsea E. Manning, Probably Chelsea, 2017; Genetic materials, custom software, 3D prints; 30 portraits, each portrait 8 x 6 x 8 inches, overall dimensions variable. Courtesy of the artists and Fridman GalleryRealizing she wanted to take out the inherent goodness in her heart by forgiving the assailant of her mother five years after, Pie would also face a lot of hesitations. She kept asking God to take over the long and hard process. i loved that it read like zac was sitting there casually telling just another story. his personality came through the informal style of writing. i loved it. it made the heavy parts lighter.
