Friends of Brixton Market campaign to save Brixton Village Archived 31 January 2009 at archive.today Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special. We finished the meal with a dessert to share – peanut butter ice cream with baobab crisps. We immediately dived in so no photo. The salty creaminess of the ice cream went really well with the surprisingly citrus flavoured honeycomb crisps.

Reviewing the market, provenance is a significant selling point in rum and provides a quality cue for competitor brands. We knew, as a premium brand, we wanted to reflect the Caribbean heritage of their base liquid, while also moving away from traditional rum branding for shelf standout and differentiation. Brixton market held the key. Awarded 90 points, Market Row Botanical Rum was described by the judging panel as: “Funky, round and complex nose. On the palate, there is some heat. Well-integrated with a meaty taste, and subtle on the botanicals. Unique.” The Market began on Atlantic Road in the 1870s and subsequently spread to Brixton Road which had a very wide footway. Brixton then was a rapidly expanding London railway suburb with newly opening shops, including the first London branch of David Greig at 54-58 Atlantic Road in 1870, and London's first purpose-built department store, Bon Marché, on Brixton Road in 1877. [1] The market was a popular attraction, with shoppers being entertained by street musicians.

Great food in a warm intimate setting. 32 seat social bar. Fresh oysters, small plates, salads, hand helds, entrees and desserts. You might think the people best placed to ‘retain the diverse, fun and world-famous atmosphere of 414’ would be the very people who created it in the first place, but Hondo has made no offer to Tony or Louise. A new place in Brixton offering Jamaican goodies from Market Row. This is part of a small chain in Shoreditch, Fulham, Canary Wharf, Borough Market and now in Brixton. If you are fed up with traditional fare then this is a lovely Afro-Caribbean alternative. The menu has four main sections – Likkle, Real Jerk, Yard Classics and Wraps. For the sweet tooth they have one offering – Rum cake and cream. Nestled above Market Row, BRXTN Village Studios was established in 2020 as a studio and creative hub for artists to discover and express their unique genius with state-of-the-art recording facilities and a dedicated art lounge.

There are a meat and vegetarian three course meals on offer, both for two to share. We chose the meat one. The starter and dessert need little preparation, but the main course needs cooking. But, very helpfully, everything was labelled and there was a handy set of instructions to guide you through the meal – it made sure that we could eat the starter without worrying about the oven. Brixton Village, Coldharbour Lane was built as Granville Arcade in 1937 to designs of Alfred and Vincent Burr; the developer was Philip Granville-Grossman. It was opened by actor Carl Brisson on 6 May 1937. It has an interior of narrow covered streets called 'Avenues', and is double-height, similar to Market Row. There are over 100 shops. It links Coldharbour Lane, Atlantic Road and Popes Road. Beder, a charity raising awareness around mental health issues and suicide prevention, has just published a cookbook. From Beder’s Kitchen, named after Beder Mirjan who took his own life aged 18 in 2017, contains contributions from a number of chefs including Atul Kochhar, Yotam Ottolenghi and Romy Gill who have provided both recipes and reflections on how food can help us look after our mental health ( beder.org.uk).

The traders and community launched the Save Brixton Arches [13] campaign, which fed into the anti-gentrification movement already underway within the Brixton community [14] and culminated in a protest at the local council meeting where community activists declared the "death of Brixton" after the plans were approved. [9] In 2017, the majority of the arches traders ceased trading and hoardings were installed over the empty premises, but development has stalled due to complications involving the leases of two of the tenants.
