Perhaps my high expectations are why it didn't quite work for me as well. I am definitely a "the book is better than the film" kinda guy but this seems to be an exception to the rule. The great thing about this book is that it would appeal equally to 12 year old or an 80 year old. It's a stereotypical "boy book," but girls will enjoy it, too.

Other directors might have tried to make a grittier adaptation of the novel Wild Pork And Watercress, written by the best-selling New Zealand author, Barry Crump. But rather than try to emulate Crump’s spare, masculine storytelling, writer-director Taika Waititi gently bends the story’s tone to his own quirky sensibility. Based on the evidence here, that hire was a brilliant move on Marvel’s part, as Waititi is fully in command of Wilderpeople, his biggest and most ambitious film to date. With Kiwi legend Sam Neill and impressive local up-and-comer Julian Dennison ( Shopping, Paper Planes) headlining the proceedings, this should again do solid business at home —where Waititi’s 2010 feature Boy remains the highest-grossing local film of all time —while also exciting distributors further afield. Crump died in 1996 of a suspected aortic aneurysm. At the time of his death he was living at Ohauiti with his fifth wife, Maggie.In visual terms, Hunt For The Wilderpeople is at its best in the first act, where Waititi and cinematographer Lachlan Milne create some beautifully lit interiors and night scenes of characters silhouetted against empty skies. The last two-thirds don’t quite reach the same heights in terms of composition – perhaps because of the vigours of shooting outdoors on a budget – but there are still occasional flourishes here and there, such as a time-lapse shot where events seem to overlap one another. It was hilarious and being married to a hunter-gatherer, I could relate to nearly everything in the book. . . .
