This coffeeshop is a bit further out than many of our recommendations and is not next to any huge tourist attractions. But it is not that you have to go too far out of your way to find it either. The location is near the Roman Jewish Ghetto, Ponte Sisto, and just across the river from the Trastevere neighborhood. We haven’t sought out a lot of tea places in Rome, but we can recommend Babington’s, which has been serving tea next to the Spanish Steps for over 100 years. The tea rooms were originally started by two English ladies who wanted to offer up proper tea to British visitors, and today it still serves up a very English tea experience.

There are about 5,000 cafes in Rome, but only a few of them are cute and cozy. What is the oldest café in Rome? The menu is delicious, as well, featuring steaks, wraps, pies, and plenty of tasty beverages to choose from. Indeed a drink here is not cheap, no surprise given Antico’s location and popularity, and I wince every time I hand over €7 for a single espresso. But it was a great coffee, to be expected from the imported Ethiopian arabica blend I chose. I was met with the sweet and bitter aroma of caramelised pecans and was left with a surprisingly silky cocoa finish on my tongue.

Roscioli Caffè

University students drop by since the faculties are only a short walk away from the café, but the place is never crowded. The caffe freddo was dosed with a sprinkling of raw sugar and the silkiness of the frothy milk on top made it taste like a melted coffee ice cream, a welcome treat for a hot day in Rome. Note that although many of our recommended locations are open in the evening; however, because the focus here is on cappuccinos and pastrami, they open early but close by 5pm or 6pm each evening.

Nearby Attractions: Pantheon (1 minute walk), Piazza Navona (3 minute walk), Museo di Roma (6 minute walk) Most of the coffee places in Rome, kind of expect you to follow the mainstream. They are not so used to seeing customers dropping by with their laptops, sitting on their own with coffee. In some shops, especially if it’s not clear immediately that you are a “tourist”, they might think that something’s wrong with you. Antico Caffé Greco has been open since at least 1760, as remembered by a plaque placed at the entrance of the café, and is located in the historical center in Via Condotti, a few steps away from the Spanish Steps and the beautiful Piazza del Popolo.A couple of their specialty coffees are the Cappuccino Domiziano (coffee, hot milk, and hot chocolate), and the alcoholic Domiziano Coffee (coffee, Baileys, Kahlua and cream). The café develops around a small public library, and therefore you’ll fit in perfectly if you have a laptop or a book with you.

Nearby Attraction: Piazza del Popolo (located in the piazza!), Spanish Steps (9 minute walk), Trevi Fountain (16 minute walk), Borghese Gallery (24 minute walk) caffè decaffeinato: a shot of espresso, decaffeinated. You can ask for any drink to be decaf, just say decaffeinato at the end. When it comes to coffee beans, Castroni coffee shops in Rome are a guarantee, both in terms of quality and variety of choices.
