Description

While Darla shares the past story, Julie is living in the unfolding present. She walks the land in silence and sits in silence with the tenant who lives in a cabin on the ranch: Virgil Blue. She learns of spirit animals and symbols. The novel raised many questions which will stay with me long after closing the book. For instance, what can we "settlers" learn from people of the First Nations on whose traditional land we now reside? Is there any way we can help to change attitudes even if we can't change history? And what of our own heritage brought to Canada by our ancestors from elsewhere?

Somewhere In Between by Donna Milner | Goodreads

A conversation at Tim Horton's (a coffee shop) begins the story of a couple looking to buy a ranch in the Chilcotin region of British Columbia. Then the landscape takes over and the first chapter becomes a beautiful description of the expanse of land. It helps to ground readers in place and introduces one of the forms of silence explored in Somewhere In-Between. This particular silence is an appreciation of the surroundings: the old-growth forest, the willow-lined creek and "a haze of coastal mountains." Star Rating: B/c this ends on such a cliffhanger I am going to wait to give my full star rating until I read book #2. :) But in between life and children, Niki is also determined to navigate her own way around the new world of print and publishing and connect with her own identity as a writer. Pseudo-punk Magnolia and underachieving gamer-geek Rom are two unlikely friends who only hang out during their walks home together after school. When they find the a portal that leads to different worlds, they use the “in-between place” as an escape from their lives in high school, then later, after college. Vlahos’scompassionate, beautifully written book contains profound wisdom. It is for anyone with an open heart who loves a good story and anyone who fears but would like to better understand hospice and the end of life.” —Katy Butler, New York Times bestselling author of The Art of Dying Well

Advance Praise

Her journey takes her deep into feminist philosophies as she struggles to understand the unfolding media- driven drama of the Oscar Pistorius trial while researching issues of ethics in the legal profession. The author, Donna Milner, is courageous in allowing this silence rather than filling it with activity. And one could say the couple is courageous in being with what is. The land, and the couple's silence, hold much more than first seen. One night the sky appears "like an electrical charged curtain" with the aurora borealis, the northern lights. I love a good mystery, and this one kept me guessing. Above all, however, this is a book about families and human relationships. Their visits through the portal bring them teetering along a tight-rope of fantasy and reality, where they don't always believe what is in front of them, not even their feelings for each other.

As angry as I was reading this book, I HAD TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO HER! I was up rage reading really late. You get a very realistic look at what it’s like being married to a narcissist while also battling depression and the isolation that usually goes along with that. I’d like to start off by saying that I am a tremendous fan of the author. Her first two books blew me away with her exceptional and brilliant story telling ability. This also applies to Somewhere In Between in regards to her skills as an author. And I can’t say enough about the narration by Erica Maity. It was flawless perfection! Two friends find a portal to another dimension and use this “in-between place” to avoid the stress of their everyday lives. What they don’t realize is that every time they enter, they alter reality. This read is a little different for me, but I really enjoyed it! I LOVE books in dual perspectives and the author did a great job writing this in dual perspective! I adored Maura and found myself really rooting for her throughout the story. Thomas kind of got on my nerves a little bit, but I’m excited to see his character growth in the next book. We got hints of it in this book so I think he’s on an interesting journey! urn:lcp:somewhereinbetwe0000gill_c2q8:epub:588645a7-e475-4f49-9e6e-d51a0b44c79f Foldoutcount 0 Identifier somewhereinbetwe0000gill_c2q8 Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t8md8tx4q Invoice 1652 Isbn 9780340923511 Tender and transformative . . . The great surpriseof The In-Between is that it makes dying feel like a peaceful, dynamic, and nourishing event that can potentially transform the lives of those who are left behind. Readers will cheer on Hadley Vlahos and, like me, be forever grateful that she wrote this book.” —Christie Tate, New York Times bestselling author of Group So, I have a soft spot for any story that uses ghosts/spirits in an interesting way, and Somewhere In Between scratches that itch.

Somewhere In Between by Kelly Peacock | Goodreads

As the story unfolds, readers are introduced to the O'Dales' daughter, Darla, who communicates from her state of "in-between." These sections are reminiscent of Alice Sebold's The Lovely Bones in which the young victim speaks from beyond the grave. For many people, the truth is stranger than fiction, and for others – well, they don’t let the truth get in the way of a good story! Dominique writes honestly and brilliantly, from the heart. Her willingness to be vulnerable and grapple openly with issues of feminism, marriage, law, ethics, and mothering makes this book a thought-provoking, brave, witty and refreshing read. A twisted psychological thriller that alternates chapters between then (memories from her past) to now (events she views as a ghost). This was brilliant and addictive. TW: SA, domestic abuse, depression, self harm, and likely a few others. Please be aware before reading the book. Nikki’s passion for law, mothering and finding a ‘work-life-balance’ is truly admirable. Amongst and between the well-written essays or ‘vignettes’ she manages to weave a golden thread – of the two highest virtues – Truth in the service of Love.
