Description

Most of the brain is active while we are dreaming, but some parts are more active than others. Neurologists use magnetic resonance imaging to produce images of the brain that allow them to see which parts of the brain are highly active while a person dreams. Studies have revealed that the same parts that process information that are active when we are awake are also active in REM sleep or, in other words, dream sleep. Irving, Z. C. Mind-wandering is unguided attention: Accounting for the “purposeful” wanderer. Philos. Stud. 173, 547–571 (2016). This dream is different than others. Sleep researchers have discovered a phenomenon known as REM atonia — a brief period during REM sleep when your body is paralyzed and can’t move.

What Do Recurring Dreams Mean? | Sleep Foundation

On waking I recognized the symbolism in the dream: in real life this friend was ”sowing” discord, anxiety, and drama into her marriage and extended family life—effectively “poisoning” the relationship waters around her. I was both concerned and upset at her destructive behaviour, and was on the verge of approaching her to try to help. This dream allowed me to see more clearly the inter-personal dynamic of what was going on, and kept me psychologically safe from being swept into her ”stream of drama.” So, dreams are sometimes re-workings of life events, but they definitely can be symbolic and they definitely can reflect a “higher” wisdom—even if that wisdom is just a manifestation of our unconscious processing of events that we are too close to in waking life to “see” clearly.

Raffaelli, Q., Andrews, E.S., Cegavske, C.C. et al. Dreams share phenomenological similarities with task-unrelated thoughts and relate to variation in trait rumination and COVID-19 concern. with more women experiencing them than men. Although recurring dreams are a normal part of sleep for most people, they can be distressing due to their content. While they can be pleasant, 77% of recurring dreams are negative Ehrhart, M. G. et al. Testing the latent factor structure and construct validity of the Ten-Item Personality Inventory. Pers. Individ. Dif. 47, 900–905 (2009). Depending on which dream interpretation dictionary you consult, you might find that your dream reveals anxiety about work, a sense of shame or embarrassment, or perhaps even a deeply repressed inner exhibitionist.
