She had a very unusual manner to go with the uncommon accent: sort of Head Girl in a boarding school, combined with the rigidly poised, religiose self-certainty of a West Coast wellness guru. There are also a few undercurrents of…other feelings…that have been running between group members for potentially a long time, one of which Roisin is aware of and one of which she definitely is not. you see how the main character grapples with her own reality, letting others chip away at what she knows to be true. The pacing got better in the second half, but then I had already given up on the story and had started skim-reading. The problem for me in Between Us is that I think Roisin’s experience with Joe doesn’t really provide a natural segue straight into a new romance.

While her female protagonist occasionally seems written to incite the reader’s exasperation, Roisin’s scenes with other women and the portrait of her flawed mother show a more deft hand at representing the gender. Between Us: The biggest rom com of 2023" hat meine Erwartungen übertroffen und verdient ohne Zweifel fünf Sterne. I do hope in the next one, McFarlane doesn't spend the majority of the book focused on a break up or an ex, as she now has in her last two books. Roisin is surprised when Joe seems to object to the break up, but she has doubts about the sincerity of his apology. It is pretty surprising and bad, and the book concludes in a hail of drama and confrontation: romantic, family, and adversarial. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. That is always the main character coming to terms with upheaval and change, generally from a break up of a long term relationship but sometimes there are other issues at play as well, like a past trauma that still overshadows them in the present, or the loss of a loved one and grief, etc. But drama still follows, in the form of her dysfunctional family and the looming question: what other parts of her now-ex's show are inspired by real events ? I'm giving this four stars, the downgrade because so much of this was, I don't know, McFarlane flavored?

While I wished for more spicy romance parts, the author's brilliant mind charmed me enough to round up my rating from 3. They go away for the weekend with a group of friends and watch the first episode of Joes new series and she sees that things reflect her life and other things crop up that haven't happen, but could it actually be the truth? They decide to celebrate both Rosie's birthday and their friends' engagement party by getting together with their longtime friendship group to watch the pilot together. Indeed, her blooming romance with another man after getting rid of her toxic ex is too instant for my liking. com}: When Joe and Roisin join their group of friends for a weekend at a country house, it’s a triple celebration – a birthday, an engagement and the launch of Joe’s shiny new crime drama on TV.Roisin lives in fear of all of them growing apart, especially since all of their lives have gone in such different paths. The basic premise of the book is this: on a friends’ getaway, Roisin starts to suspect that her boyfriend’s new TV show picks closely from real life in some of its plot. I had higher expectations for this book as a devoted fan of Mhairi McFarlane, but don't get me wrong, I still devoured it and enjoyed her brilliant writing style. You know it’s going to be good, because all of her books are good, so you can just kind of relax into reading it.

I’ve read many a book that claims to be laugh out loud funny and romantic when actually, it fails on both of those fundamentals. The relationships are portrayed with compassion and honesty, and the author’s note at the end that explains Hoover’s personal connection to the subject matter is a must-read.

All of her thoughts on Joe, her friends Meredith, Gina, Matt, Dev, her mother, her brother, her father, etc. Many thanks to NetGalley, Avon, and Harper Voyager for sharing this lovely book's digital reviewer copy with me in exchange for my honest thoughts. and nobody felt too caricature-like, everything was just very messy in the way human beings do usually get. Would have cut out some of the group vacation part and focused a bit more on the relationship developments (and not just the romantic relationships).i usually give higher than a 4 when i form a connection that leaves me unable to stop thinking about a book.
