Jamie Smart studied art at college for four years, but it was just an excuse to practise drawing animals with boggly-eyes. His comic Fish-Head Steve was the first work of its sort to be shortlisted for the Roald Dahl Funny Prize. Jamie has illustrated comics for the Sunday Times, The Dandy, The Beano, and Toxic magazine, as well as regularly publishing his well-loved Bunny vs Monkey and Looshkin stories in The Phoenix comic, and as graphic novels for children. He is also the author/illustrator of the middle-grade book series, Flember. Nyla grew up with her mum and her grandma, because her dad died when she was little – or so she’s always been told. But now Grandma Farida, “time-travelling” in her mind as her memory weakens, insists she’s seen her lost son in the supermarket. When Nyla promises Grandma that she’ll find him and bring him home, she unravels a whole web of secrets in this eloquent, affecting verse novel for 9+.

I really enjoyed Max and Chaffy: Cupcake Mystery. This book is ideal for 6 and 7 year olds and even though I’m in Year 3, I still enjoyed the story and activities. I loved this book because you had to find Chaffy and if you don’t know who Chaffy is, he is a little snowball with ears and he’s very funny. At the end of every chapter, you need to find Chaffy who will be hidden in a fun picture and it gets harder and harder as you move onto every chapter.Best friends are the BEST! But WHO is the BEST? Is it Pizza or Taco? The question is debatable! They both love water slides. They both are friends with Hot Dog and Hamburger. In fact, maybe they should have a debate and get their friends to VOTE for who’s the best! Can their friendship survive the race for the top spot on the popularity food chain? This is a brilliant introduction to comic layout and readers will feel a great sense of achievement at completing a chapter. The illustrations are the epitome of cute, as are the mix of characters and the text is appropriately sized and clearly laid out. This is a series which will be absolutely snapped up by parents and teachers everywhere and will most definitely get kids hooked on reading!
