Over a hundred new titles appeared in Europe from the 1840s-1860s alone, bringing the latest styles to a much wider public. Suffrage and other banners represent London’s role as a centre for the fashion and clothing industry, from education through to design, production, promotion, retail and wear. His son the Prince Regent, George, already a cause celebre acted as Regent for nine years of the King's madness and then reigned himself from 1820-1830.

Many of these plates are from some of the leading French, British, American, and other continental fashion journals of the 19th century and early 20th century: Belle assemblée; Le bon ton; Le Follet, courrier des salons; Journal des dames and des modes; Godey's lady's book and magazine, and others. Prints and full-scale patterns were sold through Read's establishments in London and New York, where American versions soon appeared. Although the fashion plate originated in France, they were not the only people to take advantage of these technological advancements.Not all the plates from the collection were included in this database: the database consists of 417 digital images chosen from a larger group of fashion plates. Steele, Valerie: Paris Fashion: A Cultural History, Oxford University Press, 1988, ISBN 0-19-504465-7. Le Brun Tossa in the Le Cabinet des Modes, 1785-1789, and La Mésangère in Le Journal des Dames et des Modes, 1797-1839, featured high-quality plates by excellent artists, as did John Bell in the English La Belle Assemblée 1806-1832, but Bell's illustrations were often pirated and adapted to local taste. Styles had begun to change rapidly, and fashion plates were increasingly relied upon to suggest the latest and most appropriate outfits for different times of the day and for specific occasions. Portraits, especially royal portraits, served as the base for the future of fashion plates, as they offered a visual cue as to the popular styles, fabrics and embellishments of the time.

These high-class engravings were then copied into cheaper magazines, widening the circle of readers. At the same time Hamilton’s use of the language of popular culture reflects on the nature of the imagery we all find so appealing today. From Dot Cotton’s Alexon coat to Mr Fish’s maxi-smoking dress, here’s a peek into the Museum of London’s Fashion City exhibition. The gown illustrated is elaborately described: To the lower portion of the back is attached a [silk] puff and from the bottom of the puff falls a full back-breadth, each being so gathered at the upper edge that a ruffle is formed. In 1815 with the Napoleonic wars over, Britain began to follow French fashion trends for wearing a high waistline.Almost as soon as the waist had risen, 1818 fashion plates began to show the waistline dropping and tightening. Costume is interesting because it is splendid, ridiculous, useful, pompous, dignified, sombre, gay, fantastic – because, in short, it is human. Another, longer-lived Lady's Magazine (1770-1832) followed with more frequent and regular plates from 1770 to show what society was wearing. All these wider skirt silhouettes show decorative interest, an ornamentation in keeping with Gothic over embellishment. They were pulled back by the narrow cut of the bodice and this restricted arm movement to a certain daintiness.
