About two boys Nicky and Kenny, who while waiting to see they estranged Mom go for a walk on the moors with their jack russel and get lost. No sooner do they get on the hills but the clouds gather and very soon they find themselves in a blizzard. It does something all too rare (and here it reminded me of Brooks and Almond again): It is entirely honest. It’s about two brothers who go for a walk on the moors with their dog Tina - but also about so much more than that.

I have even talked the head into a little revamp of the library so that we can display them properly! A book for older children due to the langauge used - but as it's Barrington Stoke it's in a reader friendly format.Because, you see, the cruel gods are stronger than the kind gods, and they will always beat them in the end. In conversations with past Carnegie judges about this, I’ve heard that they are encouraged rather to think about what the book sets out to do, with the aim of thinking about age but also about factors like genre.

This book is about Nicky and Kenny; two brothers who go for a walk on the moors with their little and loyal dog, Tina. You guys were so fab and Dawn was such a lovely presence in the schools - I will absolutely be in touch next time I'm in your neck of the woods.

Since 2017, when the all-white longlist and shortlist prompted widespread and well-founded criticisms about the lack of diversity in the Medal, CILIP has implemented a wide-ranging review of both the Carnegie and Greenaway Medals and has begun the process of change.

We are experiencing delays with deliveries to many countries, but in most cases local services have now resumed. In the case of Pike and the other stories in this series, what is emphasised is the realistic quality of the series, its focus on working-class life and on boys. You don't have to read the other books to enjoy Lark - the author very quickly fills you in on the back story.

It's all very well to buoy up Kenny with stories he has thought up -- until they find themselves embroiled in a real-life story which mayn't have a happy ending. This is the first book we’ve read by this author, although I now understand there are others involving the same characters which we’d definitely be interested in. The story is simple so I won't spoil it--they go out for a walk on the snowy moors and weather and events overtake them and their wee dog. His parents were both nurses and his family moved to the village of Sherburn in Elmet, outside Leeds, when he was a small child.

I have not read the book yet but for anyone who is looking to encourage a reluctant reader you must try this book. The relationship between the brothers is once again at the heart of the story and when a trip to the moors takes a dark and frightening turn it is tested to the limits. McGowan's understanding of masculine youth its brashness and unexpected tendernesses is evident, and there is a quiet worldliness underpinning the whole. This is the first book in McGowan’s series not to feature a person on the cover – which is striking given they’re all named after animals – and it breaks from the photorealist style entirely.
