The United States of America is constitution-based Federal Republic; with strong Democratic tradition. [1] Federal meaning “a federation of states” ( 50 Republican states specifically) Republic meaning “a lawful popular government with power delegated to elected officials,” and Democratic tradition meaning “a representative democracy by the people, and for the people. Meanwhile, America is liberal in the classical sense in its favoring individual and collective liberty, and not special interests, too much government power, or censorship. Learn more about the forms of government. Liberalism: The belief in protecting the rights of the individual, to ensure their maximum freedom. There have been shifts in liberal thought, the most prominent of which was the move from classical liberalism (minimal role of state, unsecured liberties) to progressive liberalism in the early twentieth century. Progressive liberals argued that civil liberties and freedoms must be safeguarded and actively protected by the state. The parties should not be confused with the overarching political spectrum, specific leaders, an ideology of a given party member, or even a specific bit of legislation. Today’s parties each represent a mix of view points from across the political spectrum, and are only loosely “left” or “right.” This is not widely understood and leads to a lot of arguing over viewpoints.

The judicial branch is made up of American courts, the most powerful being the Supreme Court. For court cases that aren’t quite solved through lower courts, eventually they can make their way up to the Supreme Court where the judges, which are called justices, rule on the dispute. Many cases that make their way to the Supreme Court aren’t answered easily by a simple glance at the Constitution, so justices must read between the lines and make educated guesses on how the situation should be handled. Justices are nominated by the president and confirmed by Congress, and if they’re confirmed to the Supreme Court, they serve lifelong terms. The justices use the Constitution as their Bible for interpreting whether or not laws and actions are allowable. Adam Smith, 1723–1790: Smith created the concept of laissez faire capitalism, advocating for a small, limited role of government in the economy. His The Wealth of Nations was published in 1776. The great debates: Debates are a great way to see how politicians perform under pressure. By transmitting and analyzing these debates, the media can play a big role in deciding which politicians trump their political opponents. Social democracy: The mildest form of socialism, advocating for the retention of private property in a society but calling for a large welfare state and some state-owned industries. The free market remains in place. The Council is the local government responsible for local issues in a small area. Counties and some villages, towns and cities have their own council. US Elections — How do they work?. This video explains how American elections work in more detail, including how Senate and House representatives are chosen. There are many different types of electoral processes that happen in America. We won’t cover each one here.

The Welsh Government is the devolved governance of Wales. Similar to UK Government, members of the Welsh Government come from Senedd Cymru. Those who would typically identify as being on the right tend to live in rural areas and suburbs, especially in the south, Midwest, and extreme rural west. Meanwhile, those on the left tend to inhabit medium and large cities, and live along either the east or west coast.Political party: A group of citizens who organize to contest elections, win public office, and impact policy making. The legislative branch is located in Congress, which is made up of two houses: the House of Representatives and the Senate. The legislative branch creates laws that pass through several layers of committees and review before being voted on by both houses of Congress and, if it passes, the president. The House of Representatives currently has 435 members, each of whom represents a district from the state that they are voting on behalf of. More populous states like California and Texas have more representatives than less populated states like Alaska and Wyoming. Even though the Senate only has 50 members, each state is still represented with two members from each. For a bill to go to the president’s office, both houses need to pass it. Representatives serve 2 year terms while senators serve 6 year terms, and can be elected into office as many times as their voters want. Fascism: An authoritarian ideology that is highly nationalistic, militaristic, and in many instances openly racist. The basic democratic principles of the Republic are laid out in two key documents. The first, “ the Constitution” defines the structure of our government [9]. The second, “ the Bill of Rights” amends the constitution to further define the role of government and, in essence, expresses what America means by “liberty” in regards to rights.

Postbehavioralism: A methodological approach that combines aspects of traditionalism and behavioralism.

When we protect the Republic, we protect Democracy and Oligarchies. We don’t protect the oligarchy because we want them to overpower us, we protect them because in the words of Madison: Critical realignment: A core group of a political party’s supporters switching to the opposition. This switch also creates a new majority party. Some people on the political right believe that religious doctrine, such as the 10 Commandments, should play a role in government. Some on the right have sought to have such Christian documents enshrined near government buildings, as according to them, the government should abide by the Bible when it comes to social issues like abortion and gay marriage.
