I did kind of guess what was going on, which made the book more fun for me, as I haven’t read any other books with this concept; very original, loved it. There's a real spark of hate and distrust that flashes throughout the group, often covered by fake smiles and a little compassion, but more often than not, revealing itself in pointed remarks and insults, especially between the two sisters. As Cat emphasises, everything her sister does is about herself, Ginny, with little care for anyone else. I can get onboard with horrible characters if they're given the depth and roundedness to make them engaging. However even after Holly makes a miraculous recovery, Chrissie is just convinced that it’s some coincidence.

Some were absolutely bonkers and (for those who can remember back to the days of Dallas) were in the same league as the supposedly long-deceased Bobby Ewing stepping out of the shower to realise that it had all been a dream. Anna and Peter were unsympathetic and I struggled to care about what happened to them, but Susi did a great job keeping the twists and turns coming. She’s worked as a statistician in the pharmaceutical industry for more than 16 years, however it was on a six month round-the-world-trip that she took with her husband that she refound her passion for writing. It is well-paced, with good characters and an uncompromising theme of secrets, lies and the bane of social media.

First mistake is that they all agree to leave their phones in the car, so that they have no distractions and can prioritise their bonding as they admire the glorious scenery. It's revealed right away that two of the four make it back from the hike, but not which two, and then what happened on the hike is revealed. Some of the characters felt flat and unlikeable, and the plot itself seemed a bit scattered and hard to follow. While the story had some great suspense and was a fast, action-packed read, there was no real satisfaction in anything that was happening. As they head into the mountains, morale is high, but as the terrain turns treacherous, cracks in the relationships start to show. The all new and soulless community reminded me of the setting for Tana French’s Broken Harbour, we have a strong sense that something is not quite right about it. However while the dangers to her family continue escalate and her selected substitutes start vanishing, she finds herself in an underworld of secretive doctors and hidden laboratories. Like, oh every bit of the mystery has been solved and now the characters are talking about life and the aftermath of whatever terrible thing happened to them.
