An epic space odyssey that seamlessly blends the genres of science fiction, mystery, and thriller, leaving you on the edge of your seat and craving for more…… His eyes landed on me again, tears gathered at the corners like little white flames. Sigr. He sent Iri’s soul to save you, Eelyn. The narrative jumps around from present to the past frequently and I felt like, for me, those transitions weren't smooth enough. They were quite jarring and I kept feeling out of touch with what was happening because of it. Additionally, as far as the characters go, I had a hard time remembering anyone besides our main, Asuka.

It won’t stay closed if you’re using your axe. Kalda dropped the needle into the bowl beside her before wiping her hands on her bloodstained apron. Also very noteworthy was Sarah Skaer's performance on the audiobook. Given that 99% of the characters were female--her ability to differentiate each one and help the reader remain immersed in the story vs expending effort to keep characters straight was remarkable.

FIERCE, VIVID, AND VIOLENTLY BEAUTIFUL. ” —Stephanie Garber, New York Times bestselling author of Caraval

As with any interstellar mission, space is limited. Asuka is selected as a contender to represent her mother's native-Japan. Although not initially chosen, Asuka earns a spot as an alternate due to unforeseen circumstances. Eelyn, but she differentiated all the characters well. Never took me out of the story. Excellent performance. But still, great pacing. One good character (who, honestly, carried the entire book), and a satisfying ending. Not too shabby.

Seventy-something out of the eighty crew members, are just invisible ghosts to the author, and in turn, to the reader. The star (now called the central star of the nebula) is extremely hot, reaching temperatures of 200,000 Kelvin. It also emits a large amount of ultraviolet radiation. This radiation ionizes the gas of the expanding planetary nebula and causes it to glow. Planetary nebulae have short lives, at least visually. As the shell expands, the white dwarf’s energy can excite the gas, but only out to a certain distance. So after 10,000 to 50,000 years, the planetary nebula stops glowing. It’s still expanding, but we can no longer see it. Most astronomers agree that a planetary nebula is the fate of our Sun in approximately 5 billion years. Determined to unravel the truth and preserve the mission's integrity, Asuka races against time to unmask the perpetrator before faith in their mission crumbles entirely—or worse, before the bomber strikes again. As tensions mount and trust wanes, the fate of their collective survival rests on Asuka's relentless pursuit of justice amidst the vast expanse of space. This. Is so much. Everything. I can’t. I just. I want to find the right words to explain why, or even how this grabbed me by the throat and squeezed until I forgot how to even breathe and no longer even cared that I couldn’t. But I can’t. I’ll try, but I already know I’m going to fail to do it justice. Sky in the Deep is Adrienne Young’s debut novel and it’s a Viking-inspired tale filled with intense battle scenes, badass characters, and great world-building.

Adrienne Young’s debut novel, Sky in the Deep released this past spring. It tells the story of a female warrior who is confronted with the fact that the brother she lost five years ago is, in fact, alive and fighting for the enemy. The novel follows her as she finds out what happened that day and in the years since while coming to terms with it all. Teralyn had the pleasure of interviewing Adrienne about writing, her novel, and more! Tell us a little about you as a person! this is an amazing sci-fi thriller that will definitely keep you up all night reading. the plot keeps moving forward and you can't help but be curious about the next chapter. it really is like the game Among Us though i've only played it once because i never got the hang of it. the novel is peopled with diverse characters with decent characterization. what i really like about our main character is her motivation and her ability to think outside of the box. i also really like how the characters are all smart and perfect in their own ways, yet still flawed-- showing that they are still human, which adds to the story's verisimilitude. this is a testament to the author's skills, as it is difficult to build believable characters who are incredibly smart and yet flawed in their own unique ways. the atmosphere in the novel was great and i think the setting was developed nicely. it's indeed a thrilling sci-fi read that will keep you reading! i was deeply immersed into the story and i was very invested in the plot. Woven throughout this thriller is a stunning exploration of identity and belonging. Our main character Asuka never really feels like she fits in both as an alternate and as a Japanese American selected to represent Japan in the competition for spots on the ship. Her story was incredibly powerful and compelling. I love how her struggle was reflected in both the past and present timelines. THIS IS A GRIPPING STORY, RICHLY TOLD. ” —Renée Ahdieh, New York Times bestselling author of Flame in the Mist Step into a Viking-inspired world, fully-realized and beautiful, heart breaking and wonderful. Here, Eelyn is a young woman of war, having spent her entire life fighting with and for her people, having felt the sharp pain of war and has emerged the most hardened warrior. After years of honing her body into a weapon, her heart and mind into unforgiving stone, Eelyn mirrors the unyielding surroundings and people of Aska. But her world is turned upside down when she discovers her brother - a brother she watched die on the battlefield - fighting alongside her enemies, the ruthless Riki.

Need Help?

In the softening dusk, Asuka went down to the beach, hunting for a keepsake: a seashell, maybe, a piece of green, polished sea glass. It was getting dark, though, and she ended up sitting on a bench on the top of the seawall, watching the waves come in, taking comfort from the surety of its rhythm. None of them felt distinct to me like Asuka did. In spite of that though, I still appreciate what the author developed here. I think this story shows a lot of great creativity and thoughtfulness about the potential future of humanity. She dropped to the ground and the blade plunged into the chest of a Riki, sending him to his knees. His huge body fell onto her, pinning her to the dirt. The blood bubbling up from his mouth poured out, covering her pale skin in a stark shining red. My father’s gaze went to Mýra before the breath that was caught in his chest let go of his panic. He took my face into his hands and looked at me. What’s happened? His eyes caught sight of the blood still seeping from my arm. He let me go, pulling his knife free to cut at the tunic of the Riki lying dead beside us. I sank to my knees, my head swimming. He fell beside me, hands running over my body and fingers sliding over blood and sweat-soaked skin. He looked me over carefully, dread pushing its way onto his face.

Even before the explosion, Asuka struggled with feelings of inadequacy. She was the final selection for the mission, faced challenges during training on Earth, and grapples with her dual identity as a half-Japanese girl raised in America. With her strained relationship with her mother and the crew members turning against each other, The Phoenix becomes Asuka's sole anchor. They stopped struggling, both looking up at me with wide eyes, and it dove deeper within me. What I was seeing. Who I was seeing. I looked around us, something churning up inside of me that I rarely felt in a fight—panic. I was nowhere near a weapon and there was no way I could take him down with my bare hands. He closed in, gritting his teeth, as he moved like a bear over the grass. Sky in the Deep does read a little older than a typical young adult novel. While it is classified as young adult with the main character being seventeen-years-old, it features many dark things that may not be comfortable for a young reader to encounter. Adrienne Young doesn’t shy away from violence and there is content and trigger warnings for the loss of a loved one, gore, murder, sexual assault, violence, physical abuse, slavery, suicide and war themes. I ran to her, hooking my fingers into his armor vest from the other side of his body, and sunk down, pulling him with me. When she was free, she sprang to her feet, finding her sword and looking around us. I gripped the handle of my axe and pried it up, out of the bones in his chest.

Did we miss something on diversity?

The Deep Sky" also felt remarkably real in the moments it presented. I felt like I could connect with each situation even though it was within a future world that we have yet to experience. Whether it's the intricate dynamics of school hierarchies, the complexities of government bureaucracies, the well-meaning but ill-informed conspiracy theorists, or the poignant exploration of lapsed friendships and estranged parents, the emotions and dilemmas faced by the characters resonate authentically. The guilt of survival, the weight of being chosen or left behind, and the characters' intelligence blended with their flaws make them believable and relatable. I first dreamed of publishing a book when I was nine years old. I’ve always loved to write but didn’t get up the courage to really pursue being an author until I was in my mid-twenties. What is the most difficult part of your artistic process? I couldn’t go. I couldn’t leave this place.” He reached to take my hand. “The path of my soul has taken a turn, just as yours has.” The last of them disappeared into the trees behind her and I turned, looking for the blue wool tunic my father was wearing beneath his armor. Aghi! The other main cluster type is a globular cluster. These objects are spherical in shape and the greatest concentration of stars lies toward their centers. Globular clusters have many more stars than open clusters, ranging from about ten thousand stars to more than one million stars. Globular clusters are old. Most are in excess of 10 billion years old.
