What’s more this formulation includes premium turmeric extract, containing our highest strength 95% curcuminoids; clinically studied undenatured collagen; high potency EPA rich fish oil with glucosamine sulphate, MSM as well as a high dose of chondroitin. MSM, or methylsulfonylmethane, is a supplement that is used to try to help a wide range of conditions, including arthritis, allergies, and even snoring. It may take up several weeks before your symptoms improve. Call your doctor if the condition you are treating with chondroitin, glucosamine, and MSM does not improve after a few weeks of treatment, or if your condition gets worse while using this product.

In the same review, the supplement was not found to improve joint mobility or function compared with a placebo ( 11). Glucosamine and chondroitin togetherOn the other hand, a 2018 analysis showed small improvements in knee osteoarthritis pain with regular use of glucosamine sulfate, though the authors suggested that higher-quality data is needed ( 7). A 2018 review of previous research found that treating knee or hip osteoarthritis with glucosamine and chondroitin led to small improvements on a pain scale, but it wasn't clear that the pain relief was actually meaningful. They might also affect blood sugarlevels, and one small study found theyraiseeye pressure, which could increase the risk for glaucoma. If you have diabetes or glaucoma, you may need to avoid these supplements, or have your doctor monitor your blood sugar levels and eye pressure more closelywhile you take them. This collagen retains its 3D structure more than the more well-known hydrolysed collagen, which is typically fragmented. The case for these supplements protecting joint health or preventing arthritis from worsening is similarly weak.

Studies havealsodiffered on which of these supplements offers the greatest benefitfor OA. Some find chondroitinto be superior, others favor glucosamine, while still othersprefera combination of the two.“Evidence would favor the two,”D’Adamosays. “They’re typically bundled that way when you buy them.”Another concern is drug interactions, which may be a problem with any combination of medications. For example, chondroitin may interact with blood thinners such as warfarin, so the combination could increase the risk of bleeding. Similarly, a 2015 sponsored study showed that combining 1,500 mg of glucosamine hydrochloride with 1,200 mg of chondroitin sulfate effectively reduced knee osteoarthritis pain, stiffness, and swelling compared with 200 mg of the osteoarthritis NSAID celecoxib ( 15). There are many different brands of glucosamine and chondroitin, which are usually sold together as one arthritis supplement. Again, there is no government monitoring to ensure the purity of these products. The first phase of GAIT, published in 2006,found that the combination of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfatedidn’t offer significant relief to participants in general, but it did help a smallsubgroup ofthosewith moderate-to-severe knee pain.Infollow-upresults of the study released in 2010, these supplements improved pain and function, although no better than a placebo or the NSAID drug celecoxib.

After 6 months, chondroitin sulfate led to similar pain scores as celecoxib and significantly lower scores than the placebo. Thus, the authors concluded that chondroitin sulfate may be an effective pain remedy for those with knee osteoarthritis pain ( 10). Tan CSS, Lee SWH. Warfarin and food, herbal or dietary supplement interactions: A systematic review. Br J Clin Pharmacol. 2021;87(2):352-374. doi:10.1111/bcp.14404 These mixed recommendations may partially stem from the fact that the manufacturer and type of the supplements can result in different study results. For example, pharmaceutical-grade varieties appear more effective compared with over-the-counter options ( 4, 5).
