Just because there wasn't a lot of development in the secondary characters didn't mean they were flat, which I appreciated. Mary McCoy did a great job in making even the most likeable of them seem suspicious at times. There was definitely a 'I like this character but can I really trust him/her?' feel through the whole book. They were hard to get a read on, and I loved it all. Annie and Alice grew up in Hollywood. Their parents never really made it but were considered insiders, going to plenty of parties and putting their daughter on display when they hosted their own. Fed up with it all, Annie leaves. Alice doesn't hear from her in years. Until one day she gets a call saying Annie's in the hospital. She's been badly beaten and is in a coma. Alice's isn't the child Annie left behind anymore and she's determined to find out who did this to her sister. Even if that means exposing a huge star in Hollywood and putting her own life in danger.

Then there's the smut. At some point, Bree discovers that touching the ghosts as an adult sets her skin 'buzzing & humming', & eventually she has a randy, fun-filled night of passion with Pax, Ambrose & Edward. And yes, at one point she orgasms so hard she goes blind. Is it really smut if they don't see stars? 🤔 And apparently she tastes great. Having a little distance on this book, I think I can now review it objectively despite being the person who wrote it.

The girls hit it off immediately despite their differences - and so begins a special friendship that will go through much terror and turmoil before the book reaches its conclusion, not least, a complete reversal of circumstances for both of them. This story features Bree who can see and hear ghosts and has always been a bit of an outsider in her village, the girl who talks to herself. An elderly neighbour has been murdered and her three resident ghosts help her investigate the crime. Something weird is happening and Bree finds the ghosts are growing somehow more tangible, more able to touch the living world. Ambrose is a blind Victorian world traveller, Pax is a Roman warrior, and Edward is a disgraced prince obsessed with naked duchesses.

We have an English Prince from the 17th century who played the field extensively during his royal days and is still a sex focused rake, a Roman Centurion who fought his last battle against the Celts on the grounds where the current Grimdale Graveyard lies and who keeps poking his sword at problems, and a blind Victorian adventurer-writer with a soft heart who shares many of Bree's wishes for life. And they all love her deeply already. I just loved making friends with the people in this book. The main characters, some I wanted to hug, some I wanted to make a nice cup of tea, sit and natter with. And two I wanted to be a mum to. This was a delight to read. I love Lesley’s books and this was no exception. I grew to love both Verity and Ruby and when events in their lives spiralled out of control, I cared deeply for them and kept reading on to see what happened next. I swear I could picture them so clearly as I read, their smiles between them as they spent together knowing that people would tale. And Verity really took Ruby under her wing which I championed despite the response she got at home. The children in this novel are far more grown up than the grown ups it would seem! Linda Cardellini as Judy Hale, a woman Jen meets at a grief support group who befriends her; she is the hit-and-run driverI LOVE sarcasm, but not poor taste, or a plot that doesn’t add up, particularly if it includes a murder mystery. Rebecca Addelman, Njeri Brown, Liz Feldman, Kelly Hutchinson, Anthony King, Emma Rathbone, Kate Robin and Abe Sylvia The novels are set in Yorkshire, England. The medieval City of York is Caslin's home town and the plot lines take in some of the UK's most rugged and beautiful landscapes, from the windswept North Sea coastline and across the stunning North York Moors.

I think that really speaks to how multifaceted and interesting the side characters were. Each had their distinct personality and secrets, some of which never even get revealed by the end of the story furthering their ambiguity. I would say that each side character also had their own motivations in mind, and these played out through their role in the plot. Honestly, I found some of the side characters (namely Jerry and Annie) more interesting than Alice- the main character. While Alice offered an pleasant enough narration, it felt more like she was of an observer to the antics of the side characters and the captivating plot rather than a solid character. I never really felt a deep connection with her nor did I really ever feel like she underwent any real character development. It kept me a bit emotionally distanced from Alice’s plights. In Film noir I usually don’t relate with the main character, but with the inclusion of a teenage narrator it feels like that could have been made possible. As that potential wasn’t realized it does feel like a bit of a missed opportunity.a b Otterson, Joe (October 17, 2019). " 'Dead to Me' Season 2 Casts Natalie Morales (EXCLUSIVE)". Variety. Verity on the other hand, is from a wealthy family who live in a big house, and she never has to worry where the next meal will come from, but underneath the facade, both girls have their own worries and secrets.
