But eventually he decided to write about it because so little had been published about ordinary Italians who helped prisoners of war ‘at great personal risk and without thought of personal gain, purely out of kindness of heart’.

Before he can decide what to do, the German sits down next to him, and tells him that he thinks he is English. ‘You must be a prisoner-of-war. That is so, is it not?’ Jenna Ortega admits she'll never dye her hair blonde or conform to industry standards because individuals 'haven't had her best interests' Read the book and you are there in the Italian mountains with him: You can feel the stony soil, smell the wood smoke in the air, sense the snow on the wind. He conjures up the stubborn, fatalistic, bloody-minded locals who risked their lives for him so vividly that they seem to be standing in front of you. You share his fears and his hopes. He makes you laugh and he makes you weep. It's quite an achievement for an author commonly labeled as a travel writer. — Simon Mawer [4] The book ends, movingly, in 1956 with Newby and Wanda, who is now his wife, returning to the Apennines with their two little children, to look up and give thanks to all those who gave him shelter. Based on a true story, "In Love and War" is a refreshingly straightforward film. Half comedy, half romance, the story is simple and unambiguous. The 'atmosfera' is warm and sunny, and the various stereotypes (the desperately unorganized or romantic Italians, the serious stern-looking Germans and the phlegmatic and pragmatic British), although unoriginal, are still humorous. Nicola Piovani's musical score also adds to the Mediterranean flavour.Love and War in the Apennines (1971) was a perfect holiday read. An adventurous tale of escape and romance set during the collapse of Fascist Italy, the book is a monument to sacrifice, courage, and gratitude. Beauty queen Athenna Crosby claims she was spotted having lunch with 'close friend' Matthew Perry a day before his death My brother gave me this book for Xmas with a note: "I know you don't like war books, but this is more about love than war and I think you'll like it". He was right. It is a marvellous book, more of a well-deserved and loving tribute to the brave Italians who sheltered Eric Newby, than a focus on himself as an escaped POW, or the details of war in Italy in 1943. I don't know how Newby manages to give such a light, sometimes amusing, touch to serious privations, hardship and fear without being annoying. His writing is just delightful - very British - again somehow without being annoying. Cindy Crawford keeps it simple in plain white top and olive green cargo pants while out and about in Malibu Priscilla Presley breaks down in tears as she says late daughter Lisa Marie was 'suicidal' months before her death

Love and War in the Apennines is Newby's tribute to the selfless and courageous people who were to be his saviours and companions during this troubled time and of their bleak and unchanging way of life. Of the cast of idiosyncratic characters, most notable was the beautiful local girl on a bike who would teach him the language, and eventually help him escape; two years later they were married and would spend the rest of their lives as co-adventurers.I walk in the Apennines south east of where Newby hid, and this terrain is very similar. There are ruins scattered all over the place and now when I gaze on the crumbling stones, choked in ivy and brambles I will picture what they looked like inside and wonder if a POW was harboured somewhere nearby. His job, he says, is to give lectures on Renaissance painting and architecture to soldiers who are, he says, mournfully, ‘engaged in destroying them’.
