Description

The Authenticity Project, Clare's debut novel, was a BBC Radio 2 bookclub pick, a New York Times bestseller, the winner of the RNA debut novel award and a Babelio award. Pooley brings an entire group of strangers together, highlights their individual storylines, and then creates the most uplifting group of friends that you could ever imagine! In Clare Pooley's author's letter at the end of this book, she talks about how she came up with these characters - how she decided to disregard the unspoken rules of commuting to create a world in which a large cast of people who take the train together become a community. Once they’re together, the characters spill the beans on their not-so-perfect lives and band together to get everyone back on track.

It treads just a bit too heavily into cliches (and honestly, I think Iona should have been older than 57 for the way her age was talked about), but if you don’t think too heavily about it, Clare Pooley has given you lots to cheer for, in a lighthearted easy read. You will absolutely fall in love with Iona and Emmie and Sanjay and Martha and Piers and Jake and David. Combining mobile and location technology, consumer surveys, and third-party data, The People Platform allows brands to understand and engage with consumers at scale. Every day she sees the same people, whom she knows only by nickname: Impossibly-Pretty-Bookworm and Terribly-Lonely-Teenager.

Initially, Iona, who is on the verge of being pushed out of her job is motivated to interact with the younger crowd to gain some insight into the lives and interests of younger people so that she can make changes in her approach to her job (she is being pressured by her boss who wants to boost readership in that demographic) but gradually she finds herself helping Piers, Sanjay, Emmie, David and Martha as they navigate through their own problems, her thoughtfulness and concern reciprocated when Iona finds herself in need of friends and support, proving first impressions might not always be accurate and it is only through kindness, compassion and communication can we truly understand one another. Working for a woman's magazine, Iona grew popular over the years due to advice given to those struggling with life. Her previous novel, The Authenticity Project was one of my favorite books of 2020, and I already know that her latest will have a spot on this year’s list as well.

Get ready to hop onboard this summer's unmissable book - the perfect feel-good and heart-warming read. He’d have died were it not for the timely intervention of Sanjay, a nurse, who gives him the Heimlich maneuver. If you are an inveterate reader, the odds are good, better than good actually, that fellow readers or close friends (sometimes, happily, they are both) that at some point they will recommend a book to you. This book tackles so many interesting themes, all with Clare's trademark humour, wonderful writing, and vibrant, loveable characters - Feel-good fiction at its best.

I realize most may disagree with this summary, but like all arts, we're each drawn to something different.
