We did start to use the variation rules which ask you to use all remaining animals (so you then have 14 each instead of 7) but even the 2-player version with these rules is still not much fun. What might surprise you is that it’s not just a dexterity stacking game but also a strategic placement game as well.

Pro tip: if you have two kids and one is decidedly much more prone to losing, make it fun when they inevitably make the whole stack fall by saying “it looks like you are starting a zoo! They love being able to control their turns and even though Animal Upon Animal uses a die that adds a randomization element, the outcome is controlled by the player’s actions. The players roll the die to see which of their animals they have to place on top of the others next. The mountain will likely collapse eventually, so, having more people means there are frequently more animals on the mountain, but also that there are now more people who aren’t you that the mountain can eventually collapse on.

But the introduction of the random die roll at the start of every turn keeps the possibilities for kids alive. Who will position the penguin on top of the crocodile, the sheep on top of the penguin, the serpent on the sheep, the tucan . With HABA’s excellent quality wooden pieces, it’s built to withstand whatever the littlest gamers can put it through while helping them learn to follow rules and increase their fine motor skills. The pieces are nice and chunky, the rules are simple, and the whole thing kind of is easy to pick up and play.

Question Mark: The other players must agree on which animal you must place on the mountain this turn.

Sure, in the past I’ve found some games that I’ve convinced them to play but I lose more than I win with that battle. on one side of the die there’s a 2 and so players can choose TWO of their animals to stack on the crocodile. Just make sure your attempts to do so don’t cause those bad boys to start sliding and topple the mountain. When Rowan was about 2 to 2 ½ we moved on to adding the die to the game and explaining to him what to do with each die roll. There’s about all there is to this game in terms of rules, but its simplicity and sheer charm is bound to keep you coming back to it, however old you are!

Players will flip over sun tiles, revealing an animal, and attempt to add that animal to the animal tower without knocking it over. A flamingo on the crocodile, a sheep on the flamingo, a snake over the sheep, so on and so on, higher and higher. The unique shape of every animal in the game makes it a lot of fun trying to stack the animals in all sorts of different ways. Players are trying to stack all of the animals before the wooden crab makes it to the end of the sun tile path. A small amount of choice is given so kids can make decisions about which stack they would like to use. Unlike Catch the Moon, there aren’t any clever positions you can really create to start building braces for future structures.
