That being said, he cannot shake some of his personal issues, which shape all that he has become, making the stories all the more engrossing. Quickly the book moves away from that theme and introduces us to Pamela, her husband Martin and their daughter Alicia. Overall, this was an intense, dark, and gritty story with complex characters that kept me turning the pages.

This is lazy and can perpetuate myths or outdated ideas, leading to stigmatisation and lack of understanding. Convinced they are dealing with a serial killer Joona is on the hunt, and when another girl is kidnapped it’s a race against the clock to solve the case.

Now, when a new girl, Mia, goes missing, Linna is sure that there is a serial kidnapper/murderer who has been targeting young girls and hopes to make a mockery of it all.

My 5 star review of this crime drama will be posted 3-4 days after it appears in Mystery and Suspense Magazine. The Mirror Man is the most recent, and potentially the darkest out of the eight books currently released in the series. With the release of The Mirror Man in English earlier this year, this series is now eight novels deep and still going strong.Aside from Joona, Kepler introduces two new characters who also serve as major actors in the mystery. At first, it is unclear how these two play a role in the plot, until the police discover that Martin was present and witnessed Jenny Lind’s murder while out walking his dog. Intentionally or not, Kepler reinforces the idea that mentally ill people are inherently dangerous in some way, despite being much more likely to be the victims of abuse rather than the perpetrators. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

We see this part of the novel through the eyes of the young woman who has been taken, and Lars Kepler does a brilliant job of getting inside her head, as we experience the emotions and the fear that she is experiencing. I didn't love the writing and thought it was quite simple at times with the majority of sentences beginning with basic pronouns. This series is new to me and I look forward to finding the time to read more of the books in this series. It is not a spoiler by now, but Jurek’s actions during that book lead her to attempting suicide at the end of the story is an immensely enrapturing moment that left readers dying to know what happened to her. Yet it never ever came close to losing me as a reader and actually pushed me forward wanting to know those answers and as I said everything is delivered in a very convincing way. Detective Joona Linna gets involved and when another girl goes missing, he fears a killer is escalating his activities. Their captor is unpredictable and as wily as he is cruel: he foils every one of their desperate attempts to escape . Had the acts been less monstrous I might be more okay with it, because as I said, just because a person belongs to a certain group, in this case the person having DID, doesn’t make them saints.
