As I bought it in Asia I ran into probs with repair and it has sat pristine but inoperable in a drawer for the last 23 years!

The range of film speeds increased to as high as ISO 1600 compared to 400 or 1000 in the original model. I could likely debate with anyone that it’s the only point-and-shoot camera that anyone really needs. While this can be fixed in post-processing, it’s unlikely that most users of this camera are going to scan and edit every shot.The camera uses a near-infrared emitting diode, a pin photo diode (whatever that is) and some kind of sorcery to triangulate the distance to the subject. I centered the viewfinder exactly where I wanted the image focused and the camera nailed it perfectly. They insert easily enough, but the compartment feels like it can open or break very easily and takes a bit of effort to get it to stay in place. I haven’t investigated the option of converting the lens on my broken L35AF for use on another camera but from what I have read, there is an afterlife for this amazing Sonnar design. The equivalent machines ( the Canon Sure Shot WP-1 or AS-6, and the Minolta Weathermatic 35, and the Pentax 90-WR, respectively), either aren’t truly submersible or feature less-worthy lenses, bulkier bodies, or clumsy controls.

Overall, I am very pleased with these images and feel that if my experience with this camera is consistent with the others out there, the AF3’s positive reputation is well deserved. The perfect thing about this camera is that it meters through the filter, which is a very helpful feature. We and our partners use data for Personalised ads and content, ad and content measurement, audience insights and product development.Reading other reviews of this camera online, it consistently earns high praise for image quality and ease of use. Again, this is too cumbersome, especially considering the ease of use found in Nikon’s half-press method.

Even in the most challenging situations, such as night shooting and shooting in bright snow, under- and over-exposures are very rare. This was Canon’s first compact camera in which focus, film advance, film rewind, and exposure were all handled by the camera. I used the focus lock feature to get the mossy tree trunk portion sharp while keeping the building in the distance blurry. Even when shooting underwater, a situation in which the manual advises to only use the manual focus mode, autofocus worked fine. I try to live with a camera for an extended period rather than run a quick film through it, to get a real feeling for it and this helps me cut away from the hype.The AF3 has a green focus confirmation LED that will illuminate in the viewfinder to confirm that the camera has what it thinks is correct focus.
