Attach the rainwater diverter to the downpipe where you have cut it off. Attach the piece of pipe you cut off to the bottom of the diverter. We installed the 70L Fiamma water tank, however we would not recommend this tank to others. It does not have a lot of the inlets in useful places, and if we were to do it again, we would get a custom tank made which sits over the wheel arch. These are good as they utilise space which is otherwise quite hard to use. Larger households won’t be disappointed with this electronic water softener from Tapworks, which provides unlimited limescale-free water for a family of seven. Metered and cheaper to run than some water softeners, it comes with the message ‘fit and forget’ from its manufacturer. We love appliances that don’t add to your to-do list! Choose the right downpipe for your water butt Whilst a water softener isn’t essential, there are some signs that suggest you may benefit from one within your home. If you are struggling to get a lather when you shower, finding your dishwasher isn't cleaning effectively or are continuously cleaning up limescale, grime and soap scum residue, it may be that you have a hard water problem. A water softener could help improve the look, taste and smell of your drinking water, whilst also helping your appliances run more effectively. How do water softeners work? If we can fit your meter outside, you don't need to be at home when we carry out this work. We'll need to turn your water off for around 20 minutes. We'll always let you know first when we need to do this. Inside your homeDrill a hole in the side of the water butt, 8cm down from the top. The hole needs to be just the right size to fit the connector fitting of the diverter through. Fit the connector piece in place by pushing it through the hole you just drilled and screwing the supplied washer and nut on. Do you want a metered water softener?: One of these will monitor your water usage and regenerate only when necessary.

If you have a fixed-term tenancy agreement of less than six months, you must ask the landlord’s permission. If your fixed-term tenancy agreement is longer than six months, you don't need your landlord's permission to have a meter but your tenancy agreement may require you to ask their permission for alterations to the property. Attach the diverter to the water butt with the piece of pipe supplied. Fit the lid onto the water butt and wait for it to rain! DIY installation of water softeners is not recommended, you will need a plumber in most cases. Which type of water softener is better? When you also take into account the fact that you’ll use only a fraction of the bathing, cleaning and laundry products that you would with hard water – plus, clothes will last longer – the investment is well worth it. How long do water softeners last?

The pipe which leads to the sink was then split using another T piece, as the sink has 2 connections (usually used for hot and cold). As we don’t have hot water going to our tank, we just connected both sides to the cold water coming from the pump. Alternatively you could blank off one of the connections, but it would mean that one of your taps/half of your mixer wouldn’t work, so we preferred to connect both to the cold. If you change to a water meter, the company will come to read your meter. You won't know exactly what you're going to be charged in every bill because the amount of water you use could increase if extra people come to live with you or if you buy any new water-using appliances. As we mentioned before, the tank did not have many useful prebuilt inlet spots, so we had to drill our own to attach the tank connector. We then used a lot of silicone to ensure we wouldn’t have any leaks. Your plants will certainly thank you for installing a butt, as rainwater is much better for plants than tap water. A water butt can be fitted to any downpipe where there is space to sit a container either directly underneath or nearby. They are easy and cheap to fit and can be an attractive feature in the garden. Choosing a Water Butt If you ask for a meter, a company should install it within three months. In areas where free meters are being offered for the first time, this period may be six months. When is it a good idea to consider changing to a water meter?

You can either cut off the downpipe and place the water butt directly below it, with the cut-off pipe going through a hole in the lid, or you can install a rainwater diverter. This is often a better option as it means that an overflow pipe is not required, and it gives more flexibility for sitting the butt. Once you have worked out your usage and you know how often you will need to fill up, you can start to work out what size tank you might need. With water tanks, it’s not just a case of buying the biggest thing you can for a couple of reasons. Firstly, water weighs a lot – 1 litre of water = 1kg, which means if you have a 200L tank that’s an extra 200kg you’re carrying around when it’s full! The other reason is that a bigger tank will be more expensive, so it’s best to work out what size you think you will actually need rather than just buying the biggest thing possible. You will be responsible for paying for any water that leaks. However, a water company won't normally charge for the first leak in an underground supply pipe. You either pay your water bill based on a fixed rate or on the actual amount of water you use, measured with a water meter.

About the author

Watersure is a scheme which helps some people with their water bills. To apply for the scheme, you must be on benefits and need to use a lot of water either for medical reasons or because your household has a certain number of school-age children. You also need to be on a water meter or be waiting to have one installed. The na_sr cookie is used to recognize the visitor upon re-entry. Promising 1,500 litres of lime-scale free water for households of up to six people and equipped with a digital meter to measure salt and water usage, this water softener can be discretely and easily installed inside your kitchen cupboard or in your garage. Many previous customers and Mumsnet users claim it’ll last you for years and that they've immediately replaced it when they've moved. If you can’t have a water meter installed for any reason, your water company may be able to put you on a cheaper tariff to save money. Read our guide to garden screening ideas – 7 ways to keep your garden private from nosy neighbours. Fitting the diverter As we plan on free camping 99% of the time we’re in our van, and our grey water will only be coming from our sink, we didn’t feel the need to install one. We use eco-friendly washing up soaps to make sure we’re not putting any harmful substances into the environment, and we also have a strainer in our sink to ensure no food waste ends up outside. This will be an arranged appointment with you. Fitting normally takes around 45 minutes and we'll need to turn your water off for around 30 minutes.Watering too often can keep roots shallow and weaken plants; wait for signs that the plant is suffering before watering The unit should also be placed near a power source, a supply inlet and a drain for water discharge. And don’t forget to clear and sweep the area to get rid of any dust and debris. Once the water comes out of the accumulator, we used a T piece to split the pipe in 2, so that it can feed both the shower and the sink. You can use either brass or plastic for these connectors – we chose to use brass, but the plastic connectors work well too. Once again the pipe is connected to these using jubilee clips. You can fit an electric shower directly over your bath or in a cubicle. Either way, make sure you leave enough room around the shower to remove the front cover for future servicing. If you have a traditional cottage garden and don’t want a big plastic barrel to spoil the look, then you can buy genuine oak whiskey barrels. Plastic butts in the style of terracotta pots, stone containers and wooden barrels are also available. If you have a large roof and need to store a lot of water, you can connect two or more butts up together or invest in a really large storage tank.
