Description

In nearly all SPD pedals prior to those with 'open' bindings, the support platform between the jaws ensures that vertical loads transfer between the cleat and platform, whether the cleat has shoulders or not. Only when the cleat is severely worn does the situation arise where the tops of the jaws bear against the shoe directly. They’re both metal with two recessed bolt holes, which, if you’re cycling with cleats, attach to the soles of your shoes with the included bolts. The SH51 is compatible with all Shimano SPD pedals, making it a versatile option for a wide range of cycling disciplines. One of the potential downsides of using clipless pedals is that they can make it more challenging to walk around off the bike. We’ve got a lot more on how to install and adjust cycling cleats, but the key thing is to set them up loosely and see how it feels as a first step.

In general, SH51 cleats are better suited for aggressive mountain biking, while SH56 cleats are better suited for less aggressive riding styles or for riders who need to frequently disengage from their pedals. However, it is important to note that the choice between the two ultimately depends on the rider’s personal preference and riding style. Originally there were just two SPD cleats: SM-SH50 was the standard single-release cleat (twist outwards only) and SM-SH55 offered multi-release (twist any direction you like and less force required), which is best for beginners and light riders. SH51 was an early (1995) improvement on the original SH50, and remains the current standard single-release cleat that fits almost all SPD pedals. b) that the heel of the cleat doesn't have a wear groove in it from the rear jaw of any appreciable depth SH56 Cleats: The SH56 cleat is a multi-release cleat that disengages from the pedal when the heel is twisted outward or inward. This multi-release function makes it easier to unclip in emergencies or for riders new to clipless pedals. Similar to the SH51, the SH56 cleat also provides four degrees of float. It has a silver color, and the rear-facing tab is embossed with an “M” and “S.”

What are SH51 and SH56 cleats?

Both the SH51 and SH52 pedal cleats have a similar design and are compatible with all Shimano SPD pedals. Having said that, clipless pedals stop your feet from sliding around, which is important if you’re pedalling at higher cadences, sprinting, riding in the wet or – for some riders – riding off-road. On that note, we’ve got a guide on clipless pedals vs flat pedals, exploring the pros and cons of each. If you’re a newbie in the clipless pedal world or enjoy leisurely rides with frequent stops (hello, coffee and croissant breaks), SH56 is calling your name. They provide the escape routes you need when unexpected obstacles cross your path. Some Final Words of Wisdom Both the Shimano SH51 and SH52 pedal cleats are designed to improve the performance and safety of riders who use clipless pedals. Shimano also has a line of pedals called “Explorer” that have the company’s “Light Action” release technology. The SM-SH56 cleats are included with the majority of them, with the SM-SH51 cleats being an option. Comparing SH51 With SH56

If you intend to do some walking in your cycling shoes, a mountain bike or gravel shoe almost always has a recess along the middle of the sole for the cleat, so it won’t skid noisily on the floor and there’s less risk of slipping.Shimano SPD cleats, a popular choice among mountain bikers and other cyclists seeking a secure shoe-to-pedal connection, are available in SH51 and SH56.
