I should know, because I bought a new color of the M50’s last week for a different article I have coming up. The two included cables offer great versatility for working at a desk or recording while plugged in a little further away. The folding, collapsible, low-profile design provides 'increased portability, making them a great choice for field recording'. Please note this information is provided for guidance only as manufacturer warranties may be updated from time to time.

The Audio-Technica ATH-M40x is a large headset with ovalesque headphones, each of which houses a 40mm dynamic driver. I was debating between M50X and M40X and still not sure wich one is the better choice for me as i'm casual listener and not doing any type of mixing etc. The bass bloat, artificial-sounding treble, inconsistent comfort levels, and questionable build all combine to make for a painfully average to below-average headphone in my mind. Both of these headphones will provide a clear, crisp sound for either casual listening purposes or studio usage. With a flat, extended frequency response these are appropriate for balancing or monitoring full-range music programme material in professional studios. In fact, she built her desktop PC herself and repaired her college laptop with nothing but Google, Reddit, and determination to guide her. A little bit of EQ can be used to balance both of these headphones to the point that they sound very similar.

The M-Series ATH-M40x professional monitor headphones are tuned flat for incredibly accurate audio monitoring across an extended frequency range. They tend to dig into the sides of your head more than I would like and cause you to want to rip them off at times. It's really annoying having mixed a track to find that the bass is weak when played on another system. Personally, I haven’t run into any issues with collapsing feature, but I could certainly see it becoming an issue with how they feel when you fold them up.As a result I’ve become pretty good at hiding my drumming from my neighbors and not annoying them in general, while playing drums as much as I want to, when I want to. It looked cool and had one interesting feature, but ultimately it was a product that was solely made to capitalize on nostalgia. Generally, though, you’re unlikely to notice much of the treble discrepancies between the ATH-M40X and ATH-M30x headsets.
