Additionally, players will then choose a scoring token that will be placed on a portion of the forest. I would highly suggest it for teachers looking for quick games to implement for classrooms or board game clubs. There’s no point working on a beautifully, enclosed, rune-filled forest floor when you have no chance of growing a tree there. Each non-purple edge of a tile has a half-circle on it; when two such edges are placed together, the owner of those tiles has created a "cookie" in that area.

I like that each player makes their own choices and risks; you can copy your opponents but that just means that you would score the same and tie, that's not a win! Legendary Forests is played over a number of turns with four phases, but as you’ll see they move very quickly. If the chosen tile number happens to be one with a light background (scoring tile), that triggers selection of tree tokens. Then they will look to see if the colored section is in a closed zone, meaning that all runes in the center of the tiles are complete circles. In this case, after tiles have been placed in the turn, each player selects a tree token to place on a corresponding colored forest area. After going through the rules, I saw that it was going to be a simple game to learn, but one that would have some great competitive opportunities. What we didn’t expect is how quickly they would come to market and be completely different from anything else we’ve played. Tiles must be placed so that colors match on all sides of the tile, and they must touch at least one other tile. After each player has placed all twenty tiles, the landscape creation is complete and based on the placement of the trees in relation to the completed circles, the player with the most points wins!

Whenever the Architect draws a tile that has a number set on a white background, each player selects a tree token to place on their tiles. Runes aren’t actually worth ANYTHING unless a tree of the same colour as the floor of the forest is growing within that space. This is, again, where I think NMBR9 had some good ideas, though I think I like this game a bit better because of the tree tokens. If you enjoy tile placement games but want to up the ante and strategy then try Azul, or for a game that involves more elements alongside tile placing, the incredible Isle of Cats.

The druids on the back do a great job of differentiating player color without distracting from the overall aesthetic of the game. I have enjoyed bringing this game into the classroom to work on planning and decision-making skills.

Set-up includes each player selecting a unique colored set of 25 tiles, laying out the tile numbered 1, and choosing a player to serve as the Architect. It’s darn pretty to look at, pleasing to play, and won’t leave you hating your opponents by the end of it. Light on Strategy Needed for the Win – Individual tile placement is key and one can keep track of the tiles not yet drawn to understand how best to place the current tile. Add in that it’s quick to play and easy to score, and I think you’ll find that this is an easy game to get to the table and the exact right kind of game for players to just want to play over and over (and I’ve indeed experienced this effect). Players must carefully choose the color of scoring tokens that they will place in their forest to have the best score possible as there are a limited number of each color.

They are all numbered and each turn the architect will draw one of their facedown tiles and announce the number to the rest of the players. Since all of my tiles are face-down, I’m never totally sure what’s still available in terms of connections or possible spaces to close off completed areas. On the less-fun side, I’m not entirely convinced that limiting trees as a resource does anything but force players to not explicitly copy each other, so, I’m vaguely irritated by it.Related Posted in review Tagged colorful games, competitive, competitive game, competitive games, cool art, cool pieces, cool theme, iello, iello games, tabletop, tabletop game, tabletop games, tile game, tile games, trees Bookmark the permalink.
