We begin with a CD, The National’s High Violet. There does seem to be plenty of power here; Terrible Love is allowed to open the record with its alternately plodding then racing rhythmic motion, never feeling lightweight or feeble. The D6 features custom drive units and a 20W digital amplifier behind the front grilles. Pure offers some of its speakers in a mono configuration, but the D6 fires sound out in stereo, and it’s all the better (and louder) for it.

It benefits from its forward presentation mainly, however, because spaciously it is cramped. Sections with thinner arrangements – the more fragile Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks, for example ­– aren’t so much affected, but as textures become busier, such as in Terrible Love or Bloodbuzz Ohio, space between instruments is compressed to become close to claustrophobic.

A cheaper alternative is the Roberts Blutune100, which has a similar price tag to the Pure Evoke C-D6 and also has very similar features. The Blutune100 has an acoustically tuned wooden cabinet that helps give it an attractive retro design. Autotuning: Once powered on, the radio will automatically search for the available stations. Wait for it to complete an autotune, after which a station will start playing. One particularly impressive feature of the Pure Evoke is how much power it manages to fit into such a small space. You should be able to easily fit this device into any room of your home. This all-in-one system in the Evoke range combines digital radio and easy wireless Bluetooth connections with a CD player and FM connectivity. This particular radio system comes with an attractive real-wood casing, which is common throughout the Evoke portfolio.

The standard Evoke D4 with Bluetooth radio comes in maple casing, but you can choose from a range of colours in the Evoke D4 Mio with Bluetooth range. The colours on offer are the same as those in the Evoke D2 with Bluetooth range (raspberry, almond, aloe, cerulean, charcoal, pewter, scarlet). There’s a much bigger sense of scale than you get with one of its smaller siblings such as the Evoke D4. To go with the quantity of sound, there’s a decent level of quality too. The C-D6 feels sturdy and has a good amount of weight to it, though at roughly 4 kg it’s not too heavy to carry. The walnut-effect design gives it a classy, premium look and adds to the depth of sound. The system looks pleasant enough and offers plenty of functionality, similar to many other Pure products, like the Avalon or Siesta Rise.We really appreciated how immersive it felt to use this radio and the fact that we could access Bluetooth streaming as well as DAB.
