After 28 days, items can still be returned at the discretion of our staff, excluding garden tools, electrical goods, and plants under our 1-year guarantee. Keep out of reach of children. Always read instructions before use. Wash splashes off skin immediately. Keep off skin. Do not breathe spray. Wash hands and exposed skin after use. Bug killers are not all bad but lots are. It all depends on how they work and how they are applied.

Encourage wildlife in the garden. Vine weevils and their grubs are eaten by a variety of predators such as birds, frogs, toads, shrews, hedgehogs and predatory ground and rovebeetles If only a few pots are affected, try sifting the grubs out by hand. Squash any you find before repotting the plants in fresh compost and putting the rest in the bin. What about barriers for vine weevil? Future Garden are not liable for any additional fees that may be incurred. Any unexpected costs must be paid by you (the customer). Biological controlfor the larvae is available as microscopic insect pathogenic nematodes. Several species and combinations are available ( Steinernema kraussei, Heterorhabditis megidis, H. bacteriophora and S. feltiae). They are availablefrom suppliers of biological controls and as sachet formulations available from some retail outlets. They are suitable for use in containers and in the open ground. For best results apply in August or early September when the soil temperature or potting mediais warm enough for the nematodes to be effective ( Steinernema species 5-20ºC/41-68ºF Heterorhabditus species 12-20ºC/ 54-68ºF) and before the vine weevil grubs have grown large enough to cause serious damage

Or you can use Zee No Weevil, a granular product applied to the surface of compost or around the base of susceptible plants. It is made from dried, crushed olive pommace (the dried leftovers from making organic olive oil) and aromatic Mediterranean herbs.

Thoroughly rinse the watering can used after use and pour the washings over compost with ornamental plants in pots. Physical barriers on top of the soil or compost also work very well. Add a 2cm (0.75in) deep layer of sharp grit or gritty gravel on top of the compost or around the base of the plant to prevent the adults from laying eggs; the egg-laying structure is irritated by the scratchy feel. BugClear Ultra Vine Weevil Killer is a systemic insecticide that can be used for container-grown plants (except edible ones). It is watered onto the compost.

Plants growing in pots and containers, outdoors or under cover, are most likely to be severely damaged by vine weevil grubs. Plants growing in the open ground are less likely to be damaged, althoughheavy infestations ofgrubscanoccur on strawberries, Primula, polyanthus, Sedum ,Heuchera and young yew plants. Ornamental plants grown in containers can be treated with the systemic neonicotinoid insecticide acetamiprid (e.g. Bug Clear Ultra Vine Weevil Killer) as a liquid drench applied to the compost. This insecticide gives protection against the grubs for up four months; treatment in mid- to late summer will control the young larvae and prevent damage occurring later in the autumn to spring period. This product cannot be used to treat edible plants or ornamental plants growing in the ground All prices shown below are per parcel with a maximum weight of 30 kg per parcel. Items over 30 kg are split into multiple boxes and charged per box. A trap containing nematodes ( Steinernema carpocapsae), isavailable for controlling adult vine weevil. The traps should be placed on the ground below plants damaged by the weevils during the summer. The adults enter the trap during the day and are infected by the nematodes The female weevils lay their eggs in the compost or soil among host plants. As a rule, this happens in August and September, though a lot depends on the weather during the previous winter and spring. In a mild year, egg-laying could start in early summer. Each female is capable of laying 1000 or more eggs. These eggs are less than 1mm across, white at first, later turning brown. They are difficult to see and much smaller than the granules of controlled-release fertiliser found in container-grown plants, which are often mistaken for insect eggs.

Sprays that promise prolonged protection after spraying are dangerous to bees and other beneficial insects. The following pesticides (from by the Pesticide Action Network) contain neonicotinoids that are harmful to bees: Using the measure provided, mix 60 ml of BugClear Ultra Vine Weevil Killer with 1 litre of water in a watering can or mixing vessel. Pour the solution over the compost, at the recommended rate. A litre of solution treats 10 litres of compost. Large items are sent via a standard 48L (48 hour large) service. Large items take from 2 working days to arrive.More serious is the damage can becaused by the soil-dwelling larvae, which are plump, white, legless grubs up to 10mm (about 3/8in)long with pale brown heads. These eat the roots of a wide range of plants andcan bore into tubers of cyclamen and begonia, and into stem bases of cacti and succulents. They can kill woody plants by gnawing away the outer tissues of the larger roots and stem bases. Most plant losses occur during September to March, when the grubs are becoming fully grown. Weevils are a group of several families of beetles in thesuperfamily Curculionoidea, there are more than 500 species in the UK. All feed on plant material, mostly live plants but a few feed on dry seeds (grain weevils) or rotting wood. Most do not cause noticeable damage to garden plants and several species are uncommon.Vine weevil is classified in a subfamily of the known as the broad nosed weevils (Entiminae), so called because the of the broad snout (rostrum) these weevils have. There are over 100 species in this subfamily in Britain. More information on broad nosed weevils from UK Beetles.
