Elac's affordable standmounters are brilliant performers for the money. Solid and unfussy about placement, the Debut B5.2s have the dynamic expression, detail and tonal sophistication to handle anything you throw at them – not to mention enough stretch in their abilities to improve even further when hooked up to a high-end system. The original LSX offered plenty of choices when it came to sources – streaming over DLNA or from Tidal, Spotify Connect, Roon compatibility and Apple AirPlay 2 – but the LSX II expands on this with wider streaming support and the modern-day addition of HMDI ARC and USB-C for TV and laptop connectivity respectively. And, thanks to the integrated amp, if you have a record player with a phono stage built-in, you can just plug it directly into these speakers. The successor to the former LSX Award-winners, this second-gen version of the successful all-in-one system takes performance and functionality to the next level, nabbing a What Hi-Fi? 2023 Award for themselves in the process. Comprising a network streamer, a Bluetooth receiver and an amplifier – all built into a pair of stereo speakers – the LSX II is a great option for those looking for convenience and musicality in two compact boxes. Songs are delivered with wide-ranging dynamics, impressive authority and scale. It’s a musically cohesive presentation that’s controlled and nicely organised. If you have the budget - and space - for these speakers, they're worth an audition.

I use the system for CDs, streaming and also for vinyl, using the analog input from my Rega P2 and Cambridge Audio 540p preamp.Despite its sleek good looks, the radius 270 doesn't settle for less than excellence in the sound quality stakes. The latest Radius range comes with gold C-CAM dome tweeters. These give the ideal balance between detail and smoothness. Upper frequencies stay clear and uncongested - even at high volume levels where inferior designs begin to distort. Twin C-CAM woofer units not only provide an insightful mid-range but also help boost bass to the levels expected from floorstanding speakers. Offering a well-balanced and accurate sound, the Radius 270s suit a wide range of music.

Here at What Hi-Fi?we review hundreds of products every year, including plenty of speakers of all shapes, sizes and types with a selection of our favourite turntables. So how do we come to our review verdicts? And why can you trust them? One of the most discreet floorstanding speakers available, the Monitor Audio Radius 270 gives a big sound from a slim cabinet. And boy has the effort paid off. PMC has hit the sweetest of sweet spots with the Prodigy 5, balancing subtle details and musical flourishes with a perceptibly heightened sense of presence, poise and confidence. In terms of sonic performance, we didn't hear many better speakers this year, and it was the Prodigy 5's musical chops that really earned them that 2023 What Hi-Fi? Award. Firstly, streaming.... I have been listening to spotify and high quality tidal. Sound is superb, detail, depth, bass...all great. Now for CDs.....this is seriously good. So good that I'm looking through boxes of cds I stored up years ago, just to see how they sound. Now in its eighth generation and going 20+ years strong, Bowers & Wilkins' 600 series of speakers has more often than not provided some superb speakers. While the Prodigy 1’s precision and organisation warrant the label ‘analytical’, the speakers aren’t informative at the expense of entertainment. Systematic, yes, but anything but soulless. And that story continues with its entry-level 607 S3. The smallest and most affordable stereo speaker that B&W makes (even if that 'budget' price has increased in the last couple of years), the 607 S3 replaces the previous 607 S2 Anniversary Edition speakers and delivers a significantly improved performance. One benefit of floor standing Speakers is that they are instantly ready for setup and positioning, whereas a bookshelf speakers will require a speaker stand, position tweaking and varying amounts of stand filler to tailor bass performance. Just as adding mass to a speaker stand will improve the scale and authority of bass performance, a weighty floor standing speaker cabinet can also improve the dynamics, depth and authority of the bass as it uses the entirety of the cabinet to create bass resonance.
