If you like crystal clear, sparkling florals, on a slightly powdery base, you are going to love this fragrance. I have the edt and edp of this. It is a very clean and clear distinctive floral that smells wonderful, especially in winter and early spring. Unlike Chanel No.5, which some have compared it, the aldehydes are not a sharp affront to your nose, but rather an airy, gossamer cloud of powdery floral goodness. It is so well composed that it is hard for me to distinguish, though it is not an abstract floral like Chanel. Rather it is a bouquet of crystalline white flowers, particularly jasmine, daffodil, and carnation (which gives it a little bit of spice), with a hint of rose. The galbanum and vetiver adds a little greenness and aromatics, and with the dry down of amber, vanilla, a hint of earthy patchouli, and a slightly anamalic musk, combine into a very polished finish. people speak about how beautiful aldehydes are (i think its these scents that cause me issues) - i only really like one scent with that note. the rest i dont really care for. It's interesting: both my daughters told me it reminds them of Niki de Saint Phalle, which was another love of mine during the eighties and which I've also recently reacquired. It never occurred to me to put the two together.In my mind they are very different scents. If anything, First has somewhat of the same vibe as Chanel 19 (another favorite) because of the hyacinth and narcissus. So I compared notes and what do you know - First and Niki indeed have many in common. This is majestic and regal. Trustworthy. Confident. This perfume shows leadership and maturity. Someone who is grounded enough to be graceful and elegant even under pressure. Someone who is cool headed, but with a warmth that allows you to know that they really "Care". At the top, notes of peach, hyacinth and raspberry are recognisable. These make way for middle notes of tuberose, orchid and jasmine. The fragrance settles with a base of sandalwood, honey and amber. The dominant notes here best suit women with a floral signature. What does it cost? The most dominant notes to my nose include freesia, vanilla, frangipani and jasmine. A creamy note of sandalwood blends with the sweet vanilla to create a smooth and delicate drydown to finish.

The floral notes are vivid, opulent and recall spring gardens. Wow! It is complex and every few minutes, you get a new note. Nothing in the modern market can compare to this. In fact, it defies the decades and transcends the genres. Smelling up close to skin is a bit nicer, i get a mature aroma (yesteryear's mothers and grandmothers floral sort). And not surprisingly I have smelled this on older ladies, which is a generational thing more than anything. This is a beauty in its own right. Can't compare with Chanel N°5 because the concept is totally different. Chanel is sharp aldehydes in your face type of perfume, anyone with a basic perfume knowledge can spot it right away. But this is a much subtle, optimistic and natural kind of aldehydes. There is a quality about this perfume that lets you know that you are dealing with someone who is not run of the mill. And what I think the most interesting part is, since aldehydes and civet are two notes that last much longer, if you apply other fragrances, the new scent will combine with aldehydes and civet notes from VC&A First.

I love a great many vintage formulas that have civet but I always imagined it to be something best represented in skanky thoroughly animalic scents.
