In regards to continuity, there are a few key scenes that don’t play out the same as the show. Whereas I agree this is all down to artistic license and having to expand a three-minute scene and turn it into a quest or a boss battle, the narrative and overall experience shouldn’t differ too much from the source material. One such example is at one point, there’s a “three months later” scene in the show. In the game, the same scene is “two months later”. I know it’s not a big difference, but there are some other events that also didn’t match up. Developed by BonusXP, the team behind the original Stranger Things Mobile game and the upcoming The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics, Stranger Things 3: The Game is almost a direct retelling of the latest season of the hit Netflix show. I would personally recommend you watch the TV show first, before playing this game, as there are certain things which presume prior knowledge, not only to seasons one and two, but season three as well. The reason for the removal isn’t clear although the GOG notice does mention it was removed at “the publisher’s request.” However, Stranger Things 3: The Game’s inclusion in the Netflix Gaming trial is unlikely to be a coincidence. Mobile gamers in Poland can currently try Stranger Things: 1984 and Stranger Things 3: The Game on Android as Netflix takes its first step into the world of gaming. Netflix states this is “an early stage” and they have “a lot of work to do in the coming months” before more games are included and the service is rolled out to more countries.

With the previous Stranger Things game, BonusXP blended a proven retro gaming formula - a little bit Zelda, a little bit Metroid - with the plot of Season 2 and the outcome was a totally pleasant and comprehensively engaging distraction. Speaking of which, you can and are encouraged to smash up everything from shrubs and fire hydrants through to beachballs and more in search of precious coins and loot. Though i’m pretty sure that Joyce Byers would be disgusted to see young Mike Wheeler come into her shop and start busting up everything in search of coins, this is a video game, a decidedly arcade styled retro one at that in which clearly developer Bonus XP knows its audience. The game uses a 16-bit art style and is played in an overhead view, similar to its previous entry in the series. However, unlike the previous entry, the game supports both local co-op and solo gameplay. While playing solo, players can use “buddy commands” to control actions of both characters. [3] a b Tailby, Stephen (2019-07-11). " Stranger Things 3: The Game Review (PS4)". Push Square . Retrieved 2023-08-04. Players replay scenes from the third season of Stranger Things. There are twelve playable characters from the series, each of whom has a unique weapon and abilities. The weapons can be upgraded using a crafting system. [1] Players can explore the open world, [2] but some areas are only accessible if players have recruited a specific character. [1] Up two characters can be active at a time; the second is controlled either by the computer or another player via local multiplayer. Players can switch between characters at any time. Combat is frequent and similar to Streets of Rage. It is played from an isometric viewpoint. [2] Development [ edit ] I’m going to give the game two scores down below, one is for fans of the show who has seen Season 3 and the other is for new players or those who haven’t seen the show. My advice would be to actually watch the show then play the game, as you’ll have more context and understand it a little better. However, it’s not a requirement as the gameplay itself holds up and is fun to play both solo and with another person. If the developers are reading this – I would have personally liked them to have created a Stranger Things 1-3 game, incorporating all the key events from all three games so it was more accessible to everyone.

Retrieved 2023-08-08. The Ultimate Edition includes the original characters from the base game, all maps, and the following Killers and Survivors (previously released in our Chapter add-ons): With Season 3, however, the choice of "video game heritage" - a little bit Zombies Ate My Neighbors, a whole lot of generic crappy isometric 16 bit adventure game - is much less inspiring and engaging. The game is just ....much less fun...than last time, and the video game representations of key plot elements are prefunctory mimics of what happens on the show, with no clever inversions or twists, no inflections of how the blending of games and show plot could subvert expectations - just hey, look, its a low-fi version of the thing you just watched on TV! a b Reseigh-Lincoln, Dom (2019-07-08).
