Description

Once everybody passes, the display of new dominos is awarded out where the highest bidder gets the best tile, the second highest bidder gets the second best domino, and so on. But if you pass during a round and don’t have a worm among your played cards, then you immediately have to take the worst tile in the display and you don’t get to steal from another player (even if your played sum equals their displayed domino). What cards you want to buy during the game depends on what strategy you want to pursue, but also on the route you want to take in your race to El Dorado. Some longer routes might be more rewarding but will require investment on certain terrain cards. This is very cleverly done and it is often a good idea to analyse the route at the start of the game to see what cards might be more valuable than others. The modular board is ace. Setting it up in different ways allows for oodles of replayability, especially as each section is double-sided. Not only that, it can be made shorter or longer to adjust the length of the game. You cannot use a card for both of your playing pieces by splitting up its power. Additionally, all playing pieces still function as barriers - you can't move onto a space that is already occupied by another playing piece - even if it is yours. As for the aforementioned expansions, Knizia says, "Being able to control doing the graphics, it gives me freedom to do expansions myself for different territories. There are lots of expansion opportunities in El Dorado, and the advantage now is that I don't have to convince an individual publisher. I discuss it with Vincent, and we do it."

The final Mandoo x Knizia collaboration is yet another design with a storied past. This one is a reimplimentation of Ravensburger’s Drachenhort (2015). Notably, Ravensburger never brought this title to North America despite it being a solid family game. But I suppose that doesn’t matter any more, because Treasures of Nakbe (1) does include English rules, (2) will hopefully make its way to the US, and (3) features some interesting new twists to the gameplay. When moving on your turn, for each card you play, choose which playing piece that card applies to. Move that playing piece, then choose again for your next card.

Exception: If you play an item card without using its function (e.g. to pass a rubble space, or to spend it as % a coin), place it above the expedition board after you played it, then put it on your discard pile. With Family Inc., you only steal from other players’ queued stashes when you conclude your turn without busting. With No Mercy, you must decide to steal mid-turn, the moment you reveal a matching card, and sometimes it’s better to not steal from others if you wish to draw a second or third card without the chance of busting.

The first challenge is to find a publisher interested in the game," says Knizia. "Ideally that would be a publisher who is willing and able to take the game and market it to its largest potential worldwide. No publisher can do that by themselves, but many publishers have built up networks that extend their reach. I would like to work with a publisher who can do that because I'd give the game to one publisher, deal only with them, then everyone would work from the same template, which leads to bigger co-publications, which is more cost effective." Note: This expansion is not compatible with the North American edition of The Quest for El Dorado (from Ravensburger). Important: You cannot combine multiple cards to move onto a landscape space with high power value! Special Spaces

What it’s like

Assemble the game as usual. The rules for movement, market, and discarding are unchanged. Each player gets a second playing piece in their color. The starting player places their playing pieces on starting spaces #1 and #3, the other player on #2 and #4. As a result, says Knizia, "For the first time in my career, I've financed and commissioned artwork for a game. I decided to step in and make sure that we would have unifying graphics. It cost me a lot of time, but that's what I had to invest to ensure that the game would exist in many countries." That said, Knizia knows that despite all of his years in the industry, his expertise is not in publishing and game production, so he went looking for someone who could handle all of the artwork, graphic design, and pre-production work.
