It’s gone as badly as Arthur Edwards expected: his son Patrick is confused, but his daughter Elizabeth is livid. This story definitely put a HUGE smile on my face and I predict it’s going to be one of the best books of 2023! She accuses him of making it up, of coming out to spite her personally, of attempting to take the spotlight away from his uncle’s engagement, anything but recognise that he’s being vulnerable to her and hoping, despite knowing how she reacted to her father’s coming out, that she might be kind to him. The dialogue didn’t seem natural and was somewhat cringey, and the character’s reactions were too OTT. An adorable and cute story, but I couldn’t really get into the book because I found the dialog to be forced and awkward…?

It's a story of fractured relationships, new blossoming romances, change, finding oneself, and proving you're never too old to grab life by the horns. I loved that it wasn't all mushy and fake - the romance plot is full of lovely moments but also packed with angst, and I enjoyed how things ended up. Alongside this depth there’s a lightness of touch too as Ryan Love has his characters create memories through simple moments and pleasures, as well as through the larger events, making the narrative feel familiar and real. When 79-year-old Arthur Edwards gathers his family together to share some important news, no one is prepared for the bombshell he drops: he's gay, and after a lifetime in the closet, he's finally ready to come out. He was lovely but, for obvious reasons, was a bit allusive, held back, never fully himself, but he works perfectly against Arthur. But there are so many issues from that start, that I simply couldn't get beyond the first few chapters.

This was a solid and original debut novel with some gentle humour and sweet moments, and I would happily read more from this author. Then, having worked with Ben for some time, he realises he’s attracted, but Shakeel makes it plain he doesn’t trust the ambitious trainee’s motives.seems more interested in defending Shakeel than he is telling Shakeel not to treat his (supposed) boyfriend in this way.
